Can the "Urban Advantage" Bring Better Global Health As City Populations Skyrocket?

urban health advantage cities population growth

City dwellers are thought to be, on average, healthier than their rural counterparts. This so-called urban health advantage is usually attributed to better access to health care and improved overall infrastructure, such as clean water, safety and education.

But many of the globe?s cities are already bursting and actually offer a far worse quality of life to those on the lower end of the income spectrum, whose plights can get overshadowed in large-scale statistics. Can the urban advantage be extended to more of the world?s population as cities continue to grow in the coming decades?

?While cities have the potential to be healthier places for their citizens, this requires active planning,? Yvonne Rydin, of the University College London?s Bartlett School of Planning, said in a prepared statement. In a new report, published online May 29, she and her co-authors on the University College London/Lancet Commission on Healthy Cities examines several initiatives across the globe?from providing gardening plots to urban residents in Cuba, to improving the pedestrian experience in Bogota, Colombia?to see what?s working and how we can best prepare for continued urban growth.

On the plus side, the density of cities can encourage walking or cycling over driving, thereby increasing physical activity of its residents and decreasing air pollution. On the minus, it can also lead to harmful outcomes. For instance, the heat island effect can increase ambient temperatures and put more people at risk during heat waves, and decreased access to arable land can make a healthful, produce-rich diet expensive.

Good planning can heighten the advantages of cities and mitigate their downsides. ?There should be an emphasis on experimenting with and learning from diverse urban health projects,? said Rydin. In Bogota, closing major streets to car traffic on Sundays and holidays has to led a huge increase in physical activity?with more than 40 percent of adults getting at least 3 hours of exercise at a time?that researchers estimate will pay back in long-term health care savings (some $3.23 to $4.26 per each dollar spent on the program). And in Cuba, individual and collective urban farms have increased access to healthful, naturally grown food for city residents for decades, with some 4 million tons of vegetables being grown inside Havana?s city limits each year.

The authors conclude that urbanization alone will not automatically help everyone lead healthier, happier lives. Already about 1 billion people live in urban slum-like conditions, and that number could double in the next 18 years. The tide of urbanization is not going to raise all proverbial ships. ?Economic growth cannot be assumed to lift all urban citizens into a zone of better health,? Rydin said. ?In many urban areas, rich people and poor people live in different epidemiological worlds, and the burden of ill-health is highest in the poorest groups. The double burden of communicable and non-communicable disease is borne predominantly by poor people.? To improve the health of all urban dwellers?present and future?concerted planning will be necessary, but global payoffs will be great.

Meteorite reveals clues in search for life on Mars

A meteorite that fell to Earth 42 years ago is helping scientists unlock clues regarding the makeup of Mars' atmosphere and its potential implications to help shape future missions to search for evidence of life on the Red Planet, a new study finds.

At the center of the meteorite study is methane ? the simplest organic molecule ? which has had scientists scratching their heads over its presence on Mars ever since the gas was first discovered on the planet in 2003.

To learn more about methane in Mars' atmosphere, researchers examined samples from the Murchison meteorite that fell over Murchison, Victoria, in Australia in September 1969. The study could offer valuable insights into the Red Planet's atmosphere, and could play an important role in the planning of future missions to search for life on Mars, the scientists said.

Updated 84 minutes ago 5/30/2012 11:16:25 PM +00:00 Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Moon Express, one of the competitors in the $30 million race to send the first private-sector probe to the lunar surface, says it's acquired one of its rivals.

      4. SpaceX Dragon capsule set to return home

The Murchison specimen is well-known for the organic material it contains, but it also has a similar composition to meteorites on Mars. As such, the scientists took particles of the space rock and showered them with ultraviolet radiation equivalent to sunlight on the Red Planet.

According to the researchers, meteorites, which regularly bombard the surface of Mars, contain enough carbon compounds to generate and unleash methane gas when they are exposed to sunlight. In fact, the amount of methane from the meteorite particles was significant enough that it could account for an ample part of the methane measured in the Martian atmosphere.

"Whether or not Mars is able to sustain life is not yet known, but future studies should take into account the role of sunlight and debris from meteorites in shaping the planet?s atmosphere," Andrew McLeod, a study team member from the University of Edinburgh's School of GeoSciences in Scotland, said in a statement.

Methane contains carbon, which is an ingredient in all living things. On Earth, much of the methane in the planet's atmosphere is produced by life, which is why the discovery of the gas on the Red Planet in 2003 by the European Space Agency's Mars Express was a compelling find.

While other processes, such as volcanic activity, can produce methane without life, researchers have been keen to investigate whether methane gas on Mars is an indicator of life on the Red Planet.

The detailed results of the study were published online May 30 in the journal Nature.

The new findings come on the heels of a separate study published last week that looked into the organic molecules within meteorites originating from Mars.

Researchers of the study examined 11 Martian meteorites, including the Tissint space rock that fell over the Moroccan desert in 2011. The scientists found that biological activity on the Red Planet could not have formed the organic materials encased within the Martian meteorites.

    Climate skeptics know their stuff

Cultural values, not scientific literacy, shape global warming views, a study finds

    Web edition : 3:05 pm

People who strongly resist data indicating that human-induced climate change could spell catastrophe aren?t ignorant about science or numerical reasoning. Quite the opposite, a new study finds: High science literacy actually boosts the likelihood that certain people will challenge what constitutes credible climate science.

Who will be receptive to climate science, the study found, depends more on cultural factors such as attitudes toward commerce, government regulation and individualism than on scientific literacy.

?Simply improving the clarity of scientific information will not dispel public conflict? over climate, the study?s authors conclude online May 27 in Nature Climate Change.

There has been a prevalent view among scientists that skeptics of climate change and its ramifications would come around if they understood the facts, says Dan Kahan of Yale Law School. But studies by his group and others have shown that cultural factors can strongly influence what people accept as truth about certain technical issues.

For the new study, Kahan and his colleagues surveyed 1,540 American adults on science, capacity to comprehend and use quantitative information, political orientation, attitudes on the roles of government and commercial enterprises in affecting risks to society and risks posed by climate.

The survey characterized cultural outlooks along dimensions of individualism and egalitarianism. People with high degrees of individualism tended to have attitude that were pro-industry and skeptical of risks. People exhibiting a high degree of egalitarianism ?tended to be morally ambivalent towards markets because they think that?s what causes social disparities,? Kahan says.

The data show that on climate change issues, ?cultural identity is what is disposing people to find evidence convincing or not,? Kahan says. And ?the study shows this divide only gets bigger, for ordinary people, when they become better able to understand science.?

The findings point to the steep uphill challenge for advocates of climate science and policy to broadly communicate risks, says political scientist Arthur Lupia of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In fact, some of the most science-literate critics will listen to experts only to generate compelling counterarguments, he says.

In America today, climate change has come to approach abortion in its cultural impact: ?It?s immediately polarizing,? observes sociologist Aaron McCright of the Environmental Science and Policy Program at Michigan State University in East Lansing. ?Hard-core deniers seem to be no more than 10 percent of the [U.S.] population ? which in some ways is good,? he says. ?It means we might still reach the other 90 percent.?

Ted Thompson speaks, OTAs, Dancing Donald Driver

    • Ted Thompson spoke with Rob Reischel on a variety of topics in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. You can tell Thompson is a scout at heart. He gives longer answers and even a little bit of insight on questions about the scouting process, and pretty much blows off questions about the draft, contracts and team building.
    • OTAs started this week?.yawn. When I become?emperor?of the universe, one of the first laws I will force upon the people is a ban on all media coverage of OTAs. Unless someone blows out his knee, there is never any news worth reporting at OTAs. You see the same stories ever year: (Insert name of young player) looks much improved. (Insert name of guy coming off injury) looks healthy and ready to go. (Insert name to team troublemaker) looks extra focused and less selfish. And on, and on, and on??
    • I?ve never watched a second of Dancing with the Stars in my entire life, but I couldn?t resist tuning in when I noticed Twitter blowing up about the forthcoming final results announcement. I flipped it on just in time to see Donald Driver declared the winner, roll around on the floor like he was on fire, and celebrate with his extremely attractive dancing partner.?I was very happy for Driver, but my attention during the 60 seconds I was tuned in remained mostly on Driver?s extremely attractive dancing partner.

Cantor Gaming has released its 2012 NFL over/under win totals and degenerates everywhere rejoiced. The Packers? and Patriots? number is set at 12, which is huge. I probably wouldn?t touch either one.

A few numbers I do like are Houston over 10, Denver under 9.5, Tampa Bay over 6 and the Bengals over 7.5.

The NFC North numbers are as follows: Packers 12, Lions 9.5, Bears 8.5 and the Vikings 6.

The Transit of Venus: June 5-6, 2012

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? Many astronomers and members of the public in Britain will be getting up early on the morning of June 6, so they can see (using precautions to avoid permanent eye damage)* the final Transit of Venus of the 21st century. The Transit, when Venus passes directly between Earth and the Sun, was last seen in 2004 and will not happen again until the year 2117.

To help the public view this rare phenomenon, the Royal Astronomical Society has created an online resource about the Transit, including a map of public events around the UK.

In astronomy, transits take place when a smaller body passes in front of a larger one. Although the Sun, Venus and Earth roughly line up every 584 days, the orbits of Earth and Venus around the Sun are tilted with respect to one another. This means that Venus normally appears to pass above or below the Sun. A transit only takes place on the rare occasions when the three bodies are almost exactly in line.

On average, Transits of Venus happens only every 80 years or so. This average figure is however very misleading, because transits occur in a 'pair of pairs' pattern that repeats every 243 years. First, two transits take place in December (around Dec 8th), 8 years apart. There follows a wait of 121 years 6 months, after which two June transits occur (around June 7th), again 8 years apart. After 105 years 6 months, the pattern repeats.

Prior to the last transit on 8 June 2004, no living person had seen a Transit of Venus (the previous one was on 6 December 1882). The forthcoming Transit will take place on 5-6 June 2012, but only the final stages will be visible from the UK. The entire event will be seen from eastern Asia and Australasia, the Pacific Ocean and the north-western parts of North America. The next transit of Venus after that will not take place until 2117, so 2012 will be the last chance in most of our lifetimes to see this extraordinary celestial event.

    Observing the transit

*NEVER look directly at the Sun, with or without a telescope or pair of binoculars, without using a safe solar filter. To do is very dangerous and is likely to result in permanent blindness.

The 2012 Transit of Venus occurs on 5-6 June, with the whole event lasting slightly under seven hours. The transit starts at 23:04 British Summer Time (22:04 UTC) on 5 June, after the sun has set in the UK. It will take about 20 minutes from the point when Venus first encroaches onto the disk of the Sun ('first contact') until the planet is fully silhouetted ('second contact'). The planet will then take a curved path across the northern part of the Sun. Mid-transit is at about 02:30 BST (01:30 UTC) on 6 June. Venus begins to leave the Sun ('third contact') at about 05:37 BST (04:37 UTC), and the transit will be over ('fourth contact') at 05:55 BST (04:55 UTC). Timings differ by a few seconds for different latitudes, but the transit will be visible from any place where the Sun is up (clouds permitting).

Unfortunately, this means that only the final stages of the transit will be visible from the UK. As a guide, on 6 June the Sun rises at 04:30 in Edinburgh, 04:46 in London, 04:51 in Belfast and 04:58 in Cardiff (all BST), so observers in the UK will be able to see the final hour or so of the event.

During the Transit, Venus will be visible in silhouette as a dark disc set against the bright solar surface or photosphere. The planet is about 1/32nd of the diameter of the Sun, so it will block about 0.1% of the Sun's light from reaching Earth. Venus will be large enough to be just visible to someone with normal eyesight, without the help of binoculars or a telescope (this should NOT be attempted without appropriate safe solar filters).

For safe viewing of the transit, the same rules apply as those for observing a partial or annular eclipse of the Sun. Eclipse viewing glasses can be used, as long as they are undamaged and observing is limited to a few minutes at a time. Note that they must NOT be used with binoculars or a telescope. For an enlarged view, an image of the Sun can be projected onto a screen by a small telescope. Pinhole projection, however, will not produce a sharp enough image to show Venus clearly.

European observers should only use eclipse glasses that are marked CE under the EU Directive on the safety of Personal Protective Equipment. Observers in other locations should also use only approved safe eclipse glasses. These are certified to conform to an agreed and effective safety standard. Under that specification the glasses or their packaging must be marked with any applicable obsolescence deadline (colloquially, the 'best-before' date). The capacity of eclipse glasses to block harmful radiations from the sun reduces with time. For example, glasses bought for the total solar eclipse in Britain in 1999 are now nearly thirteen years old and should not be used. In any case observers should inspect pre-used glasses for damage (for example scratches, holes or a weakened mounting for the lenses) and consider replacing them if there is a risk that their effectiveness in protecting the eyes is reduced.

The best way to see the Transit in the UK is to join one of the 15 public observing events taking place around the country (see the map on the RAS Transit page: http://www.ras.org.uk/transit2012). In many cases these are led by amateur astronomy groups who are well placed to offer access to equipment and to give advice on viewing the Transit safely.

    The scientific significance of transits

In the 18th and 19th centuries, transits of Venus presented valuable opportunities to tackle a fundamental problem of the time -- finding an accurate value for the distance between Earth and the Sun, called the 'Astronomical Unit' (AU). Modern determinations of the AU fix it at 149,597,870.691 km (and involve a complex technical definition, as Earth-Sun distance varies slightly with time).

In the 21st century, much of the interest in the transit of Venus of 2012 is its rarity as an astronomical spectacle, the educational opportunities it presents, and the sense of a link with important events in scientific and world history.

Astronomers are now particularly interested in the general principle of planet transits as a way of hunting for and characterizing the nature of planetary systems around other stars. When a planet crosses in front of its parent star, there is a minute dip in the star's apparent brightness. Identifying such dips is a useful method of finding planets orbiting other stars, and studying their properties. The 2012 transit will be observed by the Hinode solar observatory, the Hubble Space Telescope (that will look at the Moon during the Transit), the Venus Express mission currently in orbit around Venus and by a number of observatories on the ground.
