On-line voting for the All-Star Game ended on Thursday night. Results from the manager-coach-player voting are in house. That allows Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington to enter the final stage of filling out the American League All-Star team.
The fan voting determines the nine position-player starters, including designated hitter. The manager-coach-player voting will determine a backup at each spot other than pitcher along with eight pitchers: five starters and three backups. The final spot on the 34-man team will be determined by on-line voting among five candidates determined by Washington.
Washington will have seven choices. If form holds, he will have to ?use four of the picks to get the mandatory representative from clubs ignored in the voting. A year ago, the spurned four clubs were Baltimore, Kansas City, Minnesota and Oakland. Seattle could replace Baltimore, which has a strong candidate in closer Jim Johnson.
That would leave three wild-card picks again for Washington. A year ago, he had three choices and used each on a pitcher: Detroit closer Jose Valverde, Tampa Bay starter David Price and C.J. Wilson, then with the Rangers.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Carlos Beltran of the St. Louis Cardinals got his 2,000th career hit on an RBI single in the third inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The switch-hitting Beltran, batting left-handed, singled to the opposite field against Kevin Correia to tie the score at 2 Friday night. During a standing ovation while waiting on first base, he doffed his cap several times.
Earlier this season, the 35-year-old Beltran became first switch hitter in major league history to accumulate 300 home runs and 300 stolen bases.
The RBI was Beltran's NL-leading 60th of the season, and gave him an RBI in seven straight games.

CAIRO ? Egypt's official news agency says the newly elected Islamist president will be sworn in Saturday before a high court.
Traditionally the president is sworn in before parliament, but the legislature was dissolved by order of the Supreme Constitutional Court, which invalidated parliamentary elections.
Therefore, Mohammed Morsi will be sworn in by that court, which features judges appointed by ousted President Hosni Mubarak.
The official MENA news agency on Thursday quoted court vice president Maher Sami as saying Morsi would be sworn in before the body's 18 judges.
Morsi ran for president as the candidate of the Muslim Brotherhood, which dominated the dissolved parliament and pressed for the house to be reinstated to swear him in.
Morsi was declared winner of the runoff election on Sunday.

Fans of the Indiana Jones series already got the good news in March that the flicks are finally coming to Blu-ray this year, and now we know when. Paramount has set September 18th as the release date, and also finally revealed cover art for the set, seen above... yeah, that's really it. No matter how cartoony it is (or how mind-numbing Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was) we're sure some will still be lining up when it ships. For their trouble, they can expect a "meticulously restored" edition of Raiders of the Lost Ark, after a process supervised by director Steven Spielberg and sound designer Ben Burtt. This has included a 4K scan of the original negatives, as well as a revisiting to the original audio mix, with music tracks and sound effects that had previously only been used in mono upgraded to stereo surround for the 5.1 DTS-HD MA track. Check after the break for a press release with more details on the restoration and a trailer for the boxed set, or head to Amazon where the price is currently sitting at $90 to preorder.
Sirius XM has long had a love affair with Android, going so far as to build an Android-powered satellite radio just a few months ago. That flame is burning for at least a little while longer with plans for a Google TV app launching this summer. Much in line with Sirius XM's more recent internet options, subscribers can soon tune into virtually anything from the satellite radio lineup, including the obligatory Howard Stern, as well as online-only bonuses like ESPN SportsCenter. The radio provider tells Reuters that it worked "closely" with Google to build the app, but what secret sauce that adds (if any) is left to the imagination: the live pausing and five-hour content storage don't exactly break the mold of what we've seen so far. We'll find out very soon just how category-busting Sirius XM can get when we get a full reveal of the Google TV app in sync with the start of Google I/O.
Each month Trulia?s Housing Barometer charts how quickly the housing market is moving back to ?normal.? We summarize three key housing market indicators: construction starts (Census), existing-home sales (NAR) and the delinquency-plus-foreclosure rate (LPS First Look). For each indicator, we compare this month?s data to (1) how bad the numbers got at their worst and (2) their pre-bubble ?normal? levels.
All three indicators took a step backward in May 2012:
?Construction starts slid back for the month, but up for the year. Starts dropped from an upwardly revised 744,000 in April to 708,000 in May, a 4.8% month-over-month decline. But starts are up 28.5% year over year. Still, construction has a long way to go: starts are just 23% of the way back to normal.
?Existing home sales also decreased. Dropping from 4.62 million in April to 4.55 million in May, home sales are not quite halfway back (45%) to their normal level from their worst point during the bust.
?The delinquency + foreclosure rate ticked upward. (Remember, on this measure, lower is better.) In May, 11.32% of mortgages were delinquent or in foreclosure, inching up from 11.26% in April and 11.23% in March, though down from 12.07% a year ago. The delinquency + foreclosure rate is 36% of the way back to normal, ahead of starts but behind sales.
Averaging these three back-to-normal percentages together, the market is now 35% of the way back to normal, compared with just 19% back to normal a year ago.
The housing market recovery has hit a plateau, remaining in the 33-37% range since January after making several jumps in the second half of 2011.
Of course these statistics are going to vary from region to region, but for the most part we can say that for Northwest Florida we are seeing positive recovery in all areas of the market. European scientists say they are close to discovering the so-called God particle, which, if it exists, would help explain why matter has mass.
By Clara Moskowitz,?LiveScience / June 22, 2012
This track is an example of simulated data modelled for the ATLAS detector on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The Higgs boson is produced in the collision of two protons at 14 TeV and quickly decays into four muons, a type of heavy electron that is not absorbed by the detector. The tracks of the muons are shown in yellow.

Anticipation is rising over the expected announcement soon of more evidence for the existence of the long-sought Higgs boson particle.
The Higgs has been theorized for years, but never found. Humanity's best hope of discovering the particle lies in the?humongous atom smasher?buried underneath Switzerland and France called the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). There, physicists collide protons head-on to create explosions that give rise to new, exotic particles, including, maybe, the Higgs.
LHC researchers plan to share their latest findings at the International Conference on High Energy Physics (ICHEP) in Melbourne, Australia, from July 4-11.
In December of last year, LHC scientists at the machine's home facility, the CERN physics laboratory in Geneva, reported they'd seen?hints of what could be the Higgs boson?in an excess of particles weighing about 124 or 125 gigaelectronvolts, or GeV, a unit roughly equivalent to the mass of a proton. However, the physicists hadn't accumulated enough data to announce a discovery, which in science requires a certain level of statistical significance called "five sigma."
Experts say it's still unlikely the LHC researchers have reached the five-sigma level yet, but they have collected substantially more data since their last public announcement. [Top 5 Implications of Finding the Higgs Boson]
"They will have quite a bit more data now, but the analysis is still ongoing," said CERN press officer Renilde Vanden Broeck. "So we will have to wait and see."
The findings reported so far have been called "tantalizing hints" of the Higgs' existence by LHC physicists, but it remains possible that the signal researchers see is merely a statistical fluke.
"This is science," Vanden Broeck told LiveScience. "They are not going to announce a discovery until they are absolutely sure, when it's a real five-sigma."
And if the signal does come through more strongly in the new data, it will still take some investigation to determine if it represents the Higgs boson or something else even more exotic.
Award recognizes Dr. Elizabeth McGlynn's research contributions and leadership in improving US health care quality
(ORLANDO, Fla.) June 25, 2012 AcademyHealth announced today that Elizabeth McGlynn, Ph.D., is the 2012 recipient of its Distinguished Investigator Award.
One of the highest honors in the field of health services research and health policy, the Distinguished Investigator Award recognizes individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the field of health services research through scholarship and teaching, advancement of science and methods and leadership.
Dr. McGlynn, director of the Kaiser Permanente Center for Effectiveness & Safety Research, is an internationally known expert in the evaluation of health care quality and a leader in the field of health services research. Among her many contributions to our understanding of the level and appropriateness of U.S. health care is the landmark 2003 study "The Quality of Health Care Delivered to Adults in the United States," which found that, on average, American adults receive about half of recommended care. The study used a new method for evaluating quality that was developed under Dr. McGlynn's leadership and garnered significant media attention that contributed to a much broader understanding of the size and nature of the quality problem in the United States (McGlynn, E. et al, N Engl J Med 2003; 348:2635-2645, June 26, 2003). The research was recognized as the 2004 AcademyHealth Article-of-the-Year.
"Dr. McGlynn has dedicated her career to helping us understand, measure and evaluate health care quality," said AcademyHealth president and CEO Dr. Lisa Simpson, MD. "Her research, leadership and counsel have been critically important to our ability to identify evidence-based strategies to improve care quality and outcomes. She is truly deserving of this high honor from our field."
Dr. McGlynn is currently leading efforts to further leverage Kaiser Permanente's research infrastructure and integrated health care system to study the effectiveness and safety of new drugs, devices and therapeutic practices. The knowledge gained will enhance the ability of clinicians and patients to choose the diagnostic and therapeutic options that are best aligned with patient preferences. Dr. McGlynn is working to expand important collaborative partnerships between health care delivery system leaders and researchers, contributing to Kaiser Permanente's goal of functioning as a learning health care organization.
Dr. McGlynn also collaborates on research studies led by colleagues at institutions other than Kaiser Permanente, with a current emphasis on quality measures for children admitted to hospitals with one of five respiratory conditions. In addition, she is part of a team that is seeking to develop measures for the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act on care coordination for children with complex needs and for those with mental health problems.
"Dr. McGlynn's leadership and expertise as Director of our Center for Effectiveness and Safety Research have been central to advancing our vision of Kaiser Permanente as a learning health care organization," said Raymond J. Baxter, PhD, senior vice president, Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit, Research and Health Policy. "Given the profound impact that she has had in the field of health services research throughout her entire career, it comes as no surprise that she is this year's Distinguished Investigator. We are deeply proud and honored to have her as part of the Kaiser Permanente research team."
Dr. McGlynn is a member of the Institute of Medicine and serves on a variety of national advisory committees. She was a member of the Strategic Framework Board that provided a blueprint for the National Quality Forum on the development of a national quality measurement and reporting system and currently co-chairs NQF's Measurement Application Partnership Coordinating Committee. She serves as Secretary/Treasurer for the board of the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation and is on the editorial boards of Health Services Research and The Milbank Quarterly. She formerly served as associate director of RAND Health and held the RAND Distinguished Chair in Health Care Quality. She is the immediate past-chair of AcademyHealth's board of directors.
The Distinguished Investigator Award is presented in conjunction with the 2012 AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting. The annual meeting is the premier forum for health services research, with more than 2,000 researchers, policymakers and health care providers gathering to discuss new and innovative evidence to improve health care access, quality, value and outcomes.

AT&T and Sirius XM have filed with the FCC a joint proposal recommending rules that address interference issues between Wireless Communications Service (WCS) and Satellite Digital Audio Radio Service (SDARS) to allow for the future deployment of LTE in the 2.3 GHz WCS band.? The joint proposal recommends that the FCC adopt rules to permit WCS licensees to operate mobile systems in the WCS A and B Blocks and designate the WCS C and D Blocks as guard bands.? The guard bands will protect incumbent satellite radio services from harmful interference from WCS operations.? AT&T also submitted a separate filing with the FCC requesting that the build-out deadlines for WCS operations be extended to provide time for licensees to deploy FDD-LTE broadband mobile services in the A and B blocks once the FCC adopts the Sirius/AT&T proposal.? Under the FCC?s current rules, the construction deadline for WCS is March 4, 2014.? AT&T proposes that the Commission require coverage of 40 percent of the population in an A or B Block license area within four years?from the effective date of the revised rules and 75 percent of the population within ten years from the effective date of the revised rules.? AT&T also suggests that due to the strict limitations placed on C and D Block licensees, the FCC should impose a traditional ?substantial service? requirement during the renewal period of C and D Block licenses.
