BEIRUT (Reuters) - Hundreds of shops were burning in the ancient covered market in Aleppo on Saturday as fighting between rebels and state forces in Syria's largest city threatened to destroy a UNESCO world heritage site.
The uprising-turned-civil war that is now raging across Syria has killed more than 30,000 people, according to activist groups such as the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
But beyond the dramatic human cost, many of Syria's historic treasures have also fallen victim to an 18-month-old conflict that has reduced parts of some cities to ruins.
Rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad announced a new offensive in Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub of 2.5 million people, on Thursday, but neither side has appeared to make significant gains.
In Aleppo, activists speaking via Skype said army snipers were making it difficult to approach the Souk al-Madina, the medieval market of vaulted stone alleyways and carved wooden facades in the Old City, once a major tourist attraction.
Videos uploaded to YouTube showed dark black clouds hanging over the city skyline.
Activists said the fire might have been started by shelling and gunfire on Friday and estimated that between 700 and 1,000 shops had been destroyed so far. The accounts were difficult to verify because of government restricts on foreign media.
Aleppo's Old City is one of several locations in Syria declared world heritage sites by UNESCO, the United Nations cultural agency, that are now at risk from the fighting.
UNESCO believes five of Syria's six heritage sites - which also include the ancient desert city of Palmyra, the Crac des Chevaliers crusader fortress and parts of old Damascus - have been affected.
The British-based Observatory for Human Rights, which has a network of activists across Syria, said Assad's forces and rebels blamed each other for the blaze.
NO ONE MAKING GAINS
Heavy clashes erupted outside several military sites in Aleppo on Saturday evening. Activists said rebels were battling government forces outside the Neirab military air base.
The Observatory said clashes outside a base used for artillery training had set a nearby building alight and killed three people.
Fighting was also reported outside Bab Antakya, a stone gateway to Aleppo's Old City, which sits on ancient trade routes and survived a parade of rulers throughout its construction between the 12th and 17th century.
Rebels said they had taken the gate, but some activists said the fighting continued and neither side was truly in control.
"No one is actually making gains here, it is just fighting and more fighting, and terrified people are fleeing," said an activist contacted by telephone who declined to be identified.
He said in some districts, bodies were lying in the streets and residents would not collect them, fearing snipers.
More than 40 people had been killed in fighting across Syria, according to the Observatory.
Syria's military deadlock is also reflected diplomatically, with foreign powers stalemated over how to act. Western states and Gulf Arab countries back the opposition but most seem reluctant to interfere, while Russia, China and Iran back Assad.
The revolt against four decades of Assad family, which began in March 2011 as peaceful protests, has become an armed insurgency, with rebels holding ground in Aleppo and rural towns of northern Syria.
The fighting has crept closer to Syria's border zones, and some bullets and rockets have hit neighboring Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. Ankara warned it would take action if its territory was again hit - a mortar bomb hit a town on its southeastern frontier on Friday.
GOVERNMENT VICTORY "CERTAIN"
An advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said he was confident Syria's government would beat the rebels.
"The victory of the government of Syria against internal opponents, America, and their other Western and Arab supporters, is counted as a victory of the Islamic Republic of Iran," said Ali Akbar Velayati, according to state news agency IRNA.
"The victory of the Syrian government is certain.
Activists reported fresh clashes in the capital Damascus and its suburbs and said security forces were torching homes as helicopters buzzed overhead.
The bloodied bodies of at least 12 men were found in Damascus's northwestern suburb of Qudsaya. A video published by showed rows of men, some of them apparently shot, laid in a room whose walls were spattered with blood.
Some Damascus residents have accused government forces of summary executions in rebel districts.
"They can't arrest everyone, so they are using elimination tactics. They enter area that was held by rebels, look for people that are wanted and kill them all," one activist said.
Assad has long defended the fierce crackdown, arguing that he has been fighting Islamist militants funded from abroad.
Text messages attributed to the army were sent to all Syrian mobiles since Aleppo rebels announced their new offensive.
"To those who have implicated themselves against the state: Those who have offered you money have left you with two options: You will be killed fighting the state or it will kill you to get rid of you," one message read.
"The state is more merciful than you. Think and decide. The Syrian Army."

Xi3 has been one of the more inventive PC builders in the field, designing its Modular Computers in the belief that small, more upgradable desktops are the way of the future. The company is planning two new systems to further that dream, the X3A and X7A, but it wants our help: it's running a Kickstarter funding drive until October 28th to assist the development and garner some early adopters. Put down $503 or $603 and you'll get the entry-level X3A, a dual-core 1.65GHz (likely AMD E-450-based) PC with 4GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD and either Linux or Windows installed; splurge with $1,103 or more and you'll get the more performance-driven X7A, which jumps to a quad-core chip with a 3.2GHz peak speed, a Windows-loaded 64GB SSD and faster graphics. Assuming Xi3 makes its target, we should see the X3A and X7A arrive in January and February respectively, with Kickstarter supporters beating the larger herd by a week. Even existing owners are accounted for through a Primary I/O Board upgrade, due before the end of this year, that carries more Ethernet and USB 3.0 ports. Crowdfunding is an unusual approach to buying that next PC, without the certainties of shopping at an online store -- but we're also dealing with an unusual PC from the get-go.

Hello everyone I hope you had a wonderful week. :-)
I'm feeling much better and have been working on several pieces including an antique pie safe I picked up at an auction recently.
Today I'm sharing a small table redo that I recently finished and carried to King's Antiques.
I'm not sure how you are going to take the finish I applied to this piece, but I enjoyed how the colors peeked through so much on the blanket chest I recently re-furbished I wanted to explore that look some more.?
This is what I started with a nice, vintage, solid?wood?table. ?I lightly sanded the piece just because I'm kind of weird and sometimes I just like to sand things! As I was using chalk paint it really wasn't necessary. I then thoroughly cleaned it.
Next I roughly painted the entire piece in patches with ASCP in Versailles Green, Greek Blue, and Duck Egg Blue. When that was thoroughly dry I applied a healthy coat of Old White.
My next step was to print the ballet fairy I found at The Graphic's Fairy onto tissue paper and transfer it to the center top of the table. ?On the sides of the table I used tissue paper flowers from a napkin, and on the bottom center roses from a napkin. When decoupaging tissue paper start by applying your decoupage medium to the area you want your image, and apply the image starting at the center and moving outward using a brush loaded with Mod Podge. Be sure to only use a couple of strokes in each area as the tissue will dissolve easily.
Once that was dry I took sandpaper and distressed the edges of the images to blend them to the piece better.
I then waxed the entire piece with clear paste wax and heavily distressed the entire piece. Then applied another coat of clear wax and lightly buffed.
I really liked how you could see all the colors showing through as if the piece had been painted time and again. ?You may even think that at one time there were more images on the top.?
Hope you enjoyed this quick little redo.?
You know what I like about what I do? If I paint something no one else likes I can always keep it myself! LOL Or if I have the time, and feel like it, I can sand it down and repaint it. It's all fun to me.
Have a wonderful weekend and by the way I appreciate each and everyone of you that check in to see what I've been up to. I'm honored that you like what I do.

Apparently, Audrey Miller (pictured) was arguing with her husband when he threatened to shoot one of her beloved cats with a pellet gun.
Her response? She shot him in the stomach instead.
This all happened in Harris County, Texas. Luckily, the husband is currently in stable condition after surviving the surgery to repair the damage the .40 caliber handgun did to him.
Now, I don?t condone shooting most of the time. But I also don?t condone threatening pets with violence. After all, they are smaller than we are and trust us to take care of them.
Still, I don?t condone the shooting. Really.

A new movie opens in theaters today that couldn?t be more timely. The school year is hitting its stride, and the teachers union in Chicago just captured the national spotlight by strong-arming that city to meet its demands?at the expense of students and taxpayers.
The time is ripe for a story like Won?t Back Down, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis as mothers who can?t stand to watch their school fail any longer.
Gyllenhaal?s character is a single mom advocating for better educational opportunities for her child. Davis plays a teacher in the school who wants to improve it. This is a crucial partnership: parents and teachers working together to create a better future for students. While teachers unions have already denounced the movie, Heritage education expert Lindsey Burke has urged that criticizing unions and criticizing teachers are not one and the same.
Criticizing education unions for standing in the way of reform should not be conflated with criticizing teachers? The unions have blocked reforms such as performance pay and charter schools?have opposed alternative teacher certification that would help mid-career professionals enter the classroom, and have consistently fought the implementation of school choice options for children.
Rather, the message of Won?t Back Down is one of empowering parents. In the film, parents are attempting to ?take over? the school, referring to a type of law called a parent trigger law. Seven states have a version of this law, which gives parents the power to intervene in failing schools. If a majority of parents in a school want to reform it, these laws give them options, often including converting the school into a charter school and replacing school staff.
Charter schools are typically run by non-profit community organizations, freed from the regulatory burdens on public schools. Heritage?s Jason Richwine has explained that ?Charters have more leeway to experiment with different teaching methods, curriculum content, disciplinary procedures, and levels of parental involvement.? Parents have reported very high satisfaction with charter schools.
The state of public education is ripe for reform. Just look at this year?s trends:
Public school per-student spending is at an all-time high. Nationally, average per-pupil spending exceeds $11,400 this year.
SAT scores are at a 40-year low. This is only one marker of where the education system stands. Burke reminds us that ?graduation rates have been stagnant since the 1970s, reading and math achievement has been virtually flat over the same time period, and American students still rank in the middle of the pack compared to their international peers.?
Teachers unions are losing members. The National Education Association expects it will lose 308,000 members in the next couple of years.
Support for school choice is at an all-time high. Forty-four percent of Americans now favor allowing taxpayer dollars spent on education to follow the student, enabling them to choose a private school to attend if they desire. As Burke reports, ?School choice favorability has jumped 10 percentage points since last year, a sign that the proliferation of options such as vouchers, education savings accounts, and online learning is creating a welcome choice for families across the country.?
Viola Davis, one of the stars of Won?t Back Down, expressed the desire of so many parents recently when she told Jay Leno:
I am a parent. And as a parent, I have a child and I know that the only way she?s going to get a part of the American Dream is through education. And so if that great education is a public school, I?m going to send my kid to the public school. If that great education is a charter school, I?m going to send my kid to a charter school. If it?s a private school, I?ll send her to a private school. I think that it?s about wanting do what?s best for your kid.
Read the real-life story of the first school in the country where parents successfully used the parent trigger to convert a failing public school into a charter school.

A new video showing a dolphin giving birth has been called ?a balm? for animal lovers grieving over the baby panda who recently died at the National Zoo. The Los Angeles Times noted that ?the newborn dolphin appeared healthy, lively and playful after it emerged? while one of her caretakers complimented the mother?s ?calm, relaxed nature throughout the whole entire situation.? Is giving birth easier for nonhuman animals?
It depends on the animal. While the combination of long labor times, big infant heads, and narrow maternal hips is often cited as a particular challenge for human mothers, some other mammals face difficulties that may be just as painful. One factor that can make labor more challenging is the size of the fetus relative to the mother. If a 140-pound mother gives birth to a 7-pound infant, then that infant represents about 5 percent of her body weight. On the other hand, when a 1,000-pound horse gives birth to a 100-pound foal, that foal represents 10 percent of her body weight, or twice as much. It?s impossible to quantify exactly how much pain this causes, but giving birth to larger offspring tends to be more dangerous and to result in more tearing. For other animals, the size of the offspring isn?t as big a problem. Litter-bearing species pass more offspring, but each infant tends to be pretty small. In pigs, a full-size sow might weigh 600 to 800 pounds, but her piglets might weigh only about 1 pound, or less than 1 percent of her weight.
Most nonhuman mammals tend to hide while giving birth, presumably to avoid attracting predators during their time of highest vulnerability. But while they may keep their pain more private, it?s known that many animals show some signs of pain and distress. During labor, horses sometimes sweat, llamas and alpacas bellow or hum in a way similar to when they are injured, and many animals become more aggressive. Veterinarians recommend that you exercise caution when approaching an animal in labor, as she may lash out. Even with poultry, facial expressions change when they?re laying eggs, though it?s unclear exactly what they?re feeling.
Labor times for other animals tend to be much shorter than for humans. It can take more than 24 hours for a woman to give birth, but dogs go through labor in about an hour. Cattle take about two to three hours. Horses can give birth within 30 minutes, but with great force; if the foal isn?t positioned correctly, the uterus may rupture.
When it comes to the relative size of newborn craniums, humans are not unrivaled. While most apes have ample pelvises for bearing their offspring, many other primates are not so lucky. Squirrel monkey infants have such large heads compared to the size of their mothers? pelvises that they face a very high rate of birth complications.
Perhaps the most horrifying birth is that of the spotted hyena. Females of this species give birth through a narrow, penis-like, enlarged clitoris. Their offspring emerge from this unusual birthing organ, almost indistinguishable from the male penis of the species, after 120 days of gestation. This unusually long period of development for a predator results in offspring that are comparatively large and fully ready to kill, with their sharp teeth completely emerged through the gums. The penis-like genitalia often rip open during the process of giving birth, which can be deadly for both the mothers and their cubs. One scientist has estimated that up to 18 percent of first-time mothers die.

Many Chinese American small business owners have fallen victim to fraud and exploitation recently, as callers posing as 'police associations' solicit cash donations, World Journal reports.
In many cases, businesses have donated hundreds of dollars at a time, especially since the callers seem to target recent immigrants, who may feel obligated to donate when someone says they are from a police agency.?Senior Lead Officer Danny Chao of the LAPD says that they are aware of these phone calls and advises that business owners not make any donations to groups claiming to be police organizations. Chao also pointed out that police departments do not solicit cash from businesses, nor are businesses ever obligated to make donations, even to law enforcement agencies.

Westlawn family Jodie and Chris Pugh and children Makayla, 5, Savannah, 3, and Noah, 7, mourn the loss of their husky dog Anouk, who was bitten by a brown snake in their backyard on Wednesday.
Debrah Novak
IT TOOK more than 10 minutes for Chris Pugh to get the better of the 1.8m-long eastern brown snake that had killed his dog and threatened his family, but the Westlawn father-of-three had no regrets yesterday about removing the head of the reptile on Wednesday.
Anouk, the two-year-old husky, didn't stand a chance against the venomous brown, which is believed to have been taking shelter under the family's cubby house.
The drama began about 11.30am when Noah Pugh, 7, virtually stumbled into the snake on his way to the outside garbage bin before he alerted his mother Jodie.
Jodie gathered her other children Makayla, 5, and Savannah, 3, and called out to the family's dogs Squirt the Maltese terrier and Anouk.
"When Anouk didn't come, I started to panic," Jodie said.
Noah spotted Anouk through the house's side window, passed out on the driveway.
Jodie called her mother to look after the kids while she took Anouk to the vet and Chris downed tools at work to rush home and remove the threat.
"I couldn't go to Anouk straight away, I didn't want to take my eyes off the snake because I needed to know where it went in case it moved," he said. "It was that cranky we were almost hostage in our house ... it just kept on raising its head at us, every time we moved."
When Chris arrived, he got hold of a shovel and tried to kill the snake while Jodie drove Anouk to the vet.
But every time Chris tried to move to the back of the snake it followed him and lunged at him.
It wasn't until he found a large rock and threw it on the snake, which pinned it down, that Chris was able to finish the kill.
Meanwhile, faced with poor prospects of survival for Anouk and a potential bill upwards of $3000, Jodie had to make the heart-wrenching decision to give Anouk a lethal injection.
Chris and Jodie told the kids that Anouk had died a hero trying to protect them and the family wrote cards and laid flowers at Anouk's funeral.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - As the mobile computing wars heat up, chipmakers that supply the crucial components inside smartphones and tablets aim to grab more of the glory.
Not content to remain in the shadows of hot consumer brands like Apple or Samsung, chipmakers - including Intel, Qualcomm and Nvidia - want consumers to get to know the processors that power their mobile devices. They hope to build brand loyalty in the process.
Intel is leading the charge by extending its hugely successful "Intel Inside" marketing campaign beyond personal computers. Launched in 1991, "Intel Inside" stickers turned commodity electronic components into premium products, and eventually became ubiquitous on laptops.
This year, the Intel Inside logo has appeared on the backs of smartphones launched in the United Kingdom, India and Russia.
Intel hopes to bring the phone campaign to the United States next year, seeking a marketing advantage over rivals like Qualcomm and Nvidia, which are not as well-known among consumers.
"Without a doubt, my goal would be to have consumers walk into stores and have Intel Inside as a key driver of which phone or tablet they choose, just like we've done in the PC space," said Brian Fravel, Intel's head of branding.
The world's top chipmaker dominates the PC market but lags smaller competitors in the fast-growing mobile industry. Intel is flexing its branding muscle to try to catch up.
It remains to be seen how many handset manufacturers agree to put the Intel Inside logo on their devices. For emerging smartphone brands, with little name recognition of their own, partnering with Intel may be a "no brainer." At the other extreme, Apple refuses to share branding with any of its suppliers.
The highest-profile smartphone maker so far to use Intel's branding is Google's Motorola Mobility, which launched the Razr i in London on Sept 18.
Until now, space on most smartphones has been reserved for the vendor, such as Apple or Samsung, and carriers like Verizon Wireless.
Providers of operating systems, such as Google's Android, also covet consumer loyalty - their logos sometimes appear briefly on screens when devices are turned on.
BEWARE OF NASCAR CLUTTER
A logo-happy approach to smartphones and tablets, though, would run the risk of confusing consumers with what some experts call the NASCAR effect.
As a rule, it's seen as a good idea to add extra branding to products only when the additional brand strongly conveys a quality that the handset maker's own brand lacks.
"Can you generate end-user demand for your processors? That's what they're all looking at, and that's not an easy thing to do in the mobile space where people aren't accustomed to it," said Jack Gold, a tech industry analyst at J. Gold Associates.
Part of the reason the Intel Inside campaign has been unrivaled in the chip industry is that no one else can match Intel's $2.1 billion annual budget for advertising and marketing. Intel helps pay for the PC makers' own ads, as long as they include Intel Inside.
A TV ad promoting a phone launched by Orange in the United Kingdom in February features a supersonic car driven by a dark-clad pilot whose clothes are emblazoned with Intel Inside.
Intel surveyed customers who bought Orange's phone.
"It wasn't as though these were tech-savvy people who were reading all the benchmarks. They said Intel Inside meant performance to them," Intel's Fravel said.
Badly underestimating how quickly the mobile market would grow, Intel was slow to develop application processors, the punchy but energy-efficient chips that drive web surfing, games and other advanced features of smartphones and tablets.
Along with Qualcomm, Samsung is a major producer of mobile processors, most of which it manufactures on behalf of Apple's iPads and iPhones. Texas Instruments and Broadcom also make mobile processors, but do not advertise much to consumers.
QUALCOMM RISING
Since the 1990s, Qualcomm has been a major player in the mobile chip industry. For most of that time, advertising has been an afterthought for the San Diego-based company.
Most of Qualcomm's marketing has been directed at a specific category of tech enthusiasts keenly interested in the components used in their devices. It has taken the form of YouTube videos, Internet ads and social media instead of TV commercials and other pricey campaigns.
In October, Qualcomm is set to start a new branding campaign, coinciding with the launch of tablets and other devices using its chips and Microsoft's next-generation Windows platform.
As part of the drive, Qualcomm will share advertising with manufacturers to showcase features of its chips, said Tim McDonough, a Qualcomm vice president responsible for marketing the company's Snapdragon mobile processors.
"You'll start to see the Snapdragon brand appearing in a lot more places. But the key is having it appear in places where it has value to the user as a starting point. Right now, the consumer is saying, 'I'm ready for my next phone, I'm not sure what to buy, and I need some help,'" McDonough said, in a telephone interview.
McDonough would not say how much Qualcomm plans to spend on advertising to counter Intel, which last year even paid hit Korean pop group Girls' Generation for TV ads and a single written for Intel.
Signaling its growing interest in creating brand awareness, Qualcomm renamed a professional football venue in San Diego "Snapdragon Stadium" for a few days last year.
And suggesting Qualcomm sees the PC industry as a model for its marketing, it hired a new chief marketing officer, Anand Chandrasekher, a veteran Intel senior executive, in August.
SKIN IN THE LOGO GAME
As much smaller Nvidia transitions to the mobile market, it aims to capitalize on game enthusiasts who are passionate about its PC graphics chips. Its well-oiled marketing department hosts tournaments and aggressively interacts with industry pundits.
Last year, Nvidia spent just $9.5 million on advertising, a sum that can't buy anything close to Intel's broad recognition. But it can help win loyalty from a narrow but influential group of young men.
"Intel spends way more money branding Intel Inside, but we'll go to events, and gamers will come up to us with the Nvidia logo tattooed on their body, shaved on their head," said Ujesh Desai, Nvidia's vice president of corporate marketing.
Leveraging its popularity with game fans, Nvidia has created Tegra Zone, a collection of games optimized to work better on mobile devices using Nvidia's Tegra processors. Ads for tablets like Google's Nexus 7 boast of Nvidia's punchy graphics.
"Our tack doesn't start with, 'How much are we going to pay you so you put our logo on there?' Our tack is more, 'Here's how we can partner with you so we can create a great experience,'" Desai said.
With stagnant PC sales, executives see mobile gadgets as the future. Annual sales of processors used in smartphones and tablets could hit $25 billion by 2016, compared with $9 billion last year, according to market research firm Strategy Analytics.
As formidable as the Intel Inside brand may be, extending it from PCs to a new world of smartphones and tablets has risks.
Competition in mobile is fierce. If Intel fails to deliver the top performance that people associate with "Intel Inside," the chipmaker could damage its prized image.
"Putting an ingredient brand on the outside of your product should be like driving a sports car, something you want people to see you do because it's better," said Andy Smith, a former Intel employee who was involved with the "Intel Inside" campaign in the late 1990s. "But if the reality is that there's nothing great about the chips, then it's going to be hard for them to repeat it."

Retina displays look clear at any resolution?not just just the default?thanks to Apple's HiDPI mode. This feature doesn't work natively on non-Retina machines, but a little app called ResolutionTab can help you enable it so you can use lower resolutions without a loss of sharpness.
If you've ever set your display's resolution lower than the native option, you know it looks a little fuzzy. This is frustrating with very pixel-dense displays with higher resolutions (like on the MacBook Airs) if you have less-than-perfect eyesight. Using HiDPI mode will let you lower the resolution without decreasing quality and sharpness. ResolutionTab makes switching through HiDPI modes very simple.
In order to use ResolutionTab, you'll also need to install QuartzDebug?a free developer tool that requires a free Apple developer account. It's a little tedious, but if you want to use HiDPI mode on your Mac it's time worth taking.

Samsung's flagship phone and chief?iPhone 5 competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S III, should be getting the latest version of Android, 4.1, and also known as Jelly Bean. Oddly, the first country where the update for the phone?will be available is Poland.
Samsung, locked in a fierce battle with Apple on many fronts, shipped the Galaxy S III with Android 4.0.?
The add-ons that 4.1 bring can only make the S III even more desirable for customers. It includes Google Now, which predicts what information you'll need and want before you even ask for it by learning your habits and interests; improved Google voice search; and a notification bar that can expand to show you a portion of your email inbox instead of just the number of emails waiting to take up your time.
In an email to The Verge, a?Samsung representative?said Jelly Bean will "gradually" be introduced to other markets, something that will "vary by market and wireless carriers' requirements."?
GigaOM noted that "it?s likely that Samsung is using (Poland) as a test for its update process," so American users need to remain patient.
Other phones?in line for the upgrade, according to Samsung, include?the?Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note, Galaxy S Advance, Galaxy S II LTE, Galaxy Chat, Galaxy Ace 2, Galaxy Beam, Galaxy Ace Plus, Galaxy Mini 2, and Galaxy S Duos.
The new?Samsung Galaxy Note II, a 5.5-inch-screen phone/tablet (termed by some as a "phablet"),?due out in the U.S. by mid-November, will also ship with Jelly Bean.

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) ? Rescue helicopters flew over the high slopes of a northern Nepal peak again Monday to search for climbers lost in an avalanche that killed at least nine mountaineers and injured others. Many of the climbers were French, German and Italian.
The avalanche a day earlier hit a camp with more than two dozen climbers high up the slopes of the world's eighth-highest peak, Mount Manaslu. It came at the start of Nepal's autumn climbing season, when the end of the monsoon rains makes weather in the high Himalayas unpredictable.
Police official Basanta Bahadur Kuwar said three rescue helicopters resumed the search on Monday morning. Bad weather had forced them to halt flyover searching Sunday afternoon. Other climbers and guides on the mountain were also searching on foot and had managed to bring three more bodies to the base camp on Monday, Kuwar said.
The bodies of a Nepalese guide and a German man were recovered on Sunday and rescue pilots had reported spotting seven other bodies on the slopes. Spain's Foreign Ministry said from Madrid that one climber killed was Spanish. The identities of the others were still being confirmed.
Ten climbers survived, but many were injured and were flown to hospitals by rescue helicopters.
Nepal's autumn mountaineering season is less popular than spring, when hundreds of climbers crowd the high Himalayan peaks. Italian, German and French teams were on the mountain, with a total of 231 climbers and guides, but not all were at the higher camps hit by the avalanche, officials said.
The avalanche hit a camp at 7,000 meters (22,960 feet) early in the morning as the climbers were preparing to head toward the summit, which is 8,156 meters (26,760 feet) high.
Rescue pilot Pasang, who uses only one name, said three injured French citizens and two Germans had been transported to hospitals in Katmandu. He said rescuers were also attempting to bring the bodies of the dead back to the base camp.
Nepal has eight of the 14 highest peaks in the world. Climbers have complained in recent years that climbing conditions have deteriorated and risks of accidents have increased.
Veteran mountain guide Apa, who has climbed Mount Everest a record 21 times, traveled for months across Nepal earlier this year campaigning about the effects of global warming on the mountain peaks.
He told The Associated Press the mountains now have considerably less ice and snow, making it harder for climbers to use ice axes and crampons on their boots to get a grip on the slopes.
Loose snow also increases the risk of avalanches. The cause of Sunday's avalanche was not immediately determined.
Bill Amos, of Portland, Oregon, an avid mountaineer and ice climber who founded the mountaineering apparel company NW Alpine, said "it's super sad when our fellow climbers die." Amos said his initial thought when he heard about the deadly avalanche in Nepal was that the mountain was being overcrowded with climbers.
"That seems to be the same thing that's going on in Everest," he said. "All of that is overcrowding and these commercial expeditions trying to make money."
Amos added that people who venture into the mountains need to understand the risks and dangers associated with backcountry travel and be able to spot avalanche terrain and dangerous snowpack.

Getting a head start on stopping soil copper buildup will now be a bit easier, thanks to studies by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists. This research could help Pacific Northwest farmers develop long-term irrigation management strategies to protect crops from potentially dangerous soil copper levels.
Scientists with USDA's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) conducted a laboratory investigation to assess how copper levels in wastewater used for irrigation affected crop performance and soil microbial activities. ARS is USDA's chief intramural scientific research agency, and this work supports the USDA priority of promoting international food security.
The research was carried out by soil scientists Jim Ippolito and David Tarkalson and microbiologist Tom Ducey. Ippolito and Tarkalson work in the ARS Northwest Irrigation and Soils Research Laboratory in Kimberly, Idaho, and Ducey works at the ARS Coastal Plains Soil, Water and Plant Research Center in Florence, S.C.
Copper sulfate baths are used to prevent foot infections in dairy cattle, and the discarded foot bath is often recycled to irrigate corn and alfalfa crops. The scientists surveyed alfalfa growth and development in soils containing different levels of total copper. Copper sulfate at soil levels of up to 250 parts per million (ppm) had no effect on alfalfa growth, but alfalfa growth stopped when soil copper sulfate levels exceeded 500 ppm.
The team also discovered that beneficial soil bacterial activity declined when test soils accumulated available soil copper levels above 50 ppm. Further analysis indicated that soil levels above 63 ppm of plant-available copper resulted in alfalfa copper concentrations that could potentially harm grazing livestock, according to National Research Council guidelines.
Ippolito notes that in real-world conditions, soil copper accumulations and impacts will vary, depending on a range of factors. In addition, negative impacts might not be observed for anywhere from 15 to 75 years after irrigation begins.

DUBAI | Sun Sep 23, 2012 3:01pm EDT
DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran plans to switch its citizens onto a domestic Internet network in what officials say is a bid to improve cyber security but which many Iranians fear is the latest way to control their access to the web.
The announcement, made by a government deputy minister on Sunday, came as state television announced Google Inc's search engine and its email service would be blocked "within a few hours".
"Google and Gmail will be filtered throughout the country until further notice," an official identified only by his last name, Khoramabadi, said, without giving further details.
The Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) said Google ban was connected to the anti-Islamic film posted on the company's YouTube site which has caused outrage throughout the Muslim world. There was no official confirmation.
Iran has one of the biggest Internet filters of any country in the world, preventing normal Iranians from accessing countless sites on the official grounds they are offensive or criminal.
But many Iranians believe the block on sites such as Facebook and YouTube is due to their use in anti-government protests after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad in 2009.
Sites expressing views considered anti-government are also routinely blocked.
Iranians commonly overcome the government filter by using virtual private network (VPN) software that makes the computer appear as if it is based in another country.
But officials have long spoken of creating an Iranian Internet system which would be largely isolated from the World Wide Web.
"In recent days, all governmental agencies and offices ... have been connected to the national information network," deputy communications and technology minister Ali Hakim-Javadi was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency.
The second phase of the plan would be to connect ordinary Iranians to the national network, he said.
According to Iranian media, the domestic system would be fully implemented by March 2013 but it was not clear whether access to the global Internet would be cut once the Iranian system is rolled out.
Even using VPNs, many Iranians suffered serious problems accessing email and social networking sites in February, ahead of parliamentary elections.
WORM
The Islamic Republic tightened cyber security after its nuclear program was attacked in 2010 by the Stuxnet computer worm, which caused centrifuges to fail at its main uranium enrichment facility.
Tehran, whose nuclear programme is suspected by the West of being aimed at developing a bomb, accused the United States and Israel of deploying the worm.
Authorities said in April a computer virus was detected inside the control systems of Kharg Island - which handles the vast majority of Iran's crude oil exports - but the terminal remained operational.
Communications and Technology Minister Reza Taqipour said last month Iran needed to develop its own network to ensure the safety of the country's information.
"Control over the Internet should not be in the hands of one or two countries," he said. "Especially on major issues and during crises, one cannot trust this network at all."
Iran threatened in May to take legal action against Google over its decision to drop the term "Persian Gulf" from its Google Maps and leaving the waterway between Iran and the Arabian peninsula nameless.
Many Arab states refer to the sea as the "Arabian Gulf", a term Iran considers unacceptable.
