The number of neglected horses in Northamptonshire is increasing rapidly and animal welfare campaigners are finding it hard to keep up, animal charity RSPCA said.
The RSPCA said that it had taken in 30 horses abandoned by their owners in Northamptonshire and Leicestershire in 2011, as compared with 15 horses in 2010.
The charity held irresponsible owners for the problem, saying they bred horses without ensuring the right level of care for their pets.
Jim Lucas, an inspector at the RSPCA, said, "People are skimping on the preventative treatment like routine worming and check-ups. Having a horse as a pet is a big commitment; it's not just about finding food for them."
The charity also warned that it aimed to prosecute irresponsible and cruel owners wherever possible and secured 175 convictions in the year of 2010.
A couple from Wellingborough was recently threw behind the bars for sixteen weeks and banned from keeping animals after they were found guilty of cruelty against seven ponies.
The ponies were shifted to a boarding house paid for by the RSPCA. The bill came to 18,000 pounds.
