Microsoft releases MS11-100 for ASP.NET DoS attack

Posted on 29 December 2011.

Today Microsoft released a security bulletin addressing a flaw in ASP.NET that was disclosed early morning yesterday at the Chaos Communication Congress (CCC) in Berlin.

Microsoft tested and finished MS11-100 in record time, taking about 30 days for the process of integrating this new vulnerability with the fix that was already scheduled for January 2012. We consider Microsoft's reaction and implementation speed outstanding, as they were only notified at the tail end of the German security researchers work.

We will be tracking how the other projects and vendors affected (PHP, Oracle, Phython, Ruby and others) are rolling out their patches.

The bulletin fixes the DOS attack vector by providing a limit to the number of variables that can be submitted for a single HTTP POST request. The default limit is 500 which should be enough for normal web applications, but still low enough to neutralize the attack as described by the security researchers in Germany.

This addresses the most obvious attack method immediately and leaves the reimplementation of the hash function for a future update.

Overall the bulletin addresses four issues: one critical, two important (one of them the DoS issue). We recommend installing as soon as possible if you have web based infrastructure that uses ASP.NET.

Huawei Ascend II now available from US Cellular, free after rebate

Huawei Ascend II

We heard last week that US Cellular would be carrying the Huawei Ascend II -- a 3.5-inch candy bar style Android phone running Gingerbread -- and today they have made it available at the low price of free on a new agreement and after rebates.  While the Ascend II isn't a powerhouse (it has a Qualcomm MSM7627 at 600MHz) it has specs that make it more than acceptable to most folks.  It's nice to see a more consumer-friendly company like US Cellular getting closer with Android, and it's clearly what a lot of people want.  If you're interested in grabbing one of these free Android phones, hit the link and have a look.

More: US CellularThanks, Danny!

Paul's surge may prompt a new look from GOP voters

(AP) ? Ron Paul wants to legalize pot and shut down the Federal Reserve. He thinks the federal government has no authority to outlaw abortion, no business bombing Iran to keep it from acquiring a nuclear weapon, and no justification to print money unless it's backed up by gold bars.

And he might win the Iowa caucuses.

The closer the first votes of the 2012 presidential campaign get, the more competitive the Texas congressman appears to become. It's a moment his famously fervent supporters have longed for. Plenty of others are asking: What's Ron Paul about, again?

As in his two prior quixotic campaigns for president, Paul has toiled for months as a fringe candidate best known for staking out libertarian positions. As every other Republican candidate lined up to attack President Barack Obama's health care law and to promise tax cuts, Paul again demanded audits of the Federal Reserve and a return to the gold standard.

Leading in some state polls, Paul is getting a look from mainstream voters in Iowa, where the 76-year-old obstetrician has emerged as a serious contender in the Jan. 3 caucuses ? and in other early voting states, should he pull off a victory.

The sudden rush of attention to Paul's resume hasn't been kind. He's spent the past week disowning racist and homophobic screeds in newsletters he published decades ago, including one following the 1992 riots in Los Angeles that read, "Order was only restored in L.A. when it came time for the blacks to collect their welfare checks three days after rioting began."

"Everybody knows I didn't write them and they're not my sentiments, so it's sort of politics as usual," Paul said during a recent Iowa campaign stop.

Paul returns to Iowa on Wednesday, giving his impressive grass-roots organization in the state a last chance to present, and perhaps defend, positions he's staked out over a long political career and reiterated during the 13 Republican debates held this year.

Paul has served a dozen terms in Congress as a Republican, but he espouses views that have made him the face of libertarianism in the U.S. He blames both Republicans and Democrats for running up the federal debt and opposes any U.S. military involvement overseas. He wants to bring home all troops from all U.S. bases abroad.

He vows to do away with five Cabinet-level departments ? Commerce, Education, Energy, Housing and Urban Development, and Interior ? and repeal the amendment to the Constitution that created the federal income tax. He opposes federal flood insurance and farm subsidies and wants to remove marijuana from the federal list of controlled substances.

He says he'll cut $1 trillion out of the first budget he offers as president. He doesn't believe in a border fence but says illegal immigrants shouldn't get a free education in public schools.

He's reliably described by political pundits as non-establishment, quirky, unorthodox. During a Republican debate in Sioux City, Iowa, earlier this month, Paul defended his views and rejected the idea that they make him unelectable.

"The important thing is, the philosophy I'm talking about is the Constitution and freedom, and that brings people together," Paul said. "It brings independents in the fold and it brings Democrats over on some of these issues."

Paul doesn't always side with the most extreme conservative proposals. When it comes to Newt Gingrich's suggestion that judges could be hauled before Congress to explain their rulings, Paul joined other Republicans in dismissing the idea.

Paul's recent surge in Iowa isn't the first time the GOP establishment has been forced to pay attention to him. A fundraising blitz that netted $5 million in one day in 2008 led Republican operatives to weigh whether he was a bigger threat to siphon votes than previously thought.

Now he may be in his best position yet to do more than just steal votes.

"I see this philosophy as being very electable, because it's an American philosophy, it's the rule of law," Paul said.

Japan Azumi: Japan-India in final stages of deciding on dollar

By REUTERS, , Updated: December 26, 2011 9:37 PM

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan and India are in the final stages of deciding on a dollar swap agreement and expect to reach agreement during Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's visit to India this week, Japan's finance minister said on Tuesday.

An earlier $3 billion arrangement came into force in 2008 but expired in June. The Nikkei business newspaper reported on Sunday that the new one would be set at $10 billion.

Further financial cooperation as well as Japanese support for infrastructure in India will be a key focus at talks between the leaders of the two countries, Finance Minister Jun Azumi told a news conference.

Azumi also said he expects Japan's exports will pick up early next year if the European economy stabilizes and currency levels reflect Japan's economic fundamentals.

Van Halen Confirm David Lee Roth Reunion Tour

New video shows band reunited with original singer.

Van Halen fans got the best Christmas present of all over the weekend when the legendary Los Angeles rockers confirmed the long-standing rumor that they will be reuniting for a tour with original madcap lead singer David Lee Roth.

The announcement came via a video released on Monday on the band's official site in which the 57-year-old Roth is seen unleashing some of his classic high-kicking stage moves alongside his former bandmates guitarist Eddie Van Halen and drummer Alex Van Halen, as well as the group's current bass player, Eddie's son, Wolfgang.

Photos: Van Halen's early years.

The black and white video shows the band mugging along to their iconic hits "Jump," "Panama" and "Hot for Teacher" amid a shower of confetti and balloons on a club stage. The easy camaraderie belies the infamously testy relationship between Eddie Van Halen and Roth, as the pair seem to be getting along as they run around the stage of the Roxy Theatre on L.A.'s legendary Sunset Strip.

The site promises that the first tickets for the reunion tour will go on sale on January 10.

Van Halen's original bass player and backing vocalist, Michael Anthony, was booted from the band in 2006 after 32 years and replaced by teenager Wolfgang. After parting ways with Roth in 1985, Van Halen rebooted with singer Sammy Hagar in 1985, enjoying a string of hit albums and songs through 1996, when Hagar was shown the door and briefly replaced by former Extreme singer Gary Cherone, who only lasted three years in the slot. After bringing Hagar back in from 2003 to 2005, Van Halen invited Roth back into the fold several years ago and toured with him in 2007 and 2008.

In addition to the tour, the group are working on their first album of new material with Roth in 27 years. They recently signed to Interscope Records after spending their entire career on Warner Bros. Records.

10 top apps for your Honeycomb Android tablet

New Android tablet owner? Once you're done familiarizing yourself with your device and have learned how to use the Android Market, it's time to download and install apps that'll make your new gadget a lot more useful. While not all apps on the Market are compatible with your Honeycomb tablet, you still have thousands to choose from ? many of which are completely free!

To help you decide which among the bevy of free titles to download first, here are 10 of the handiest and best free Honeycomb-optimized apps. Even if you've had your tablet for quite some time, you may still spot one or two that you haven't encountered yet.

1. Tablet Keyboard

Download:Tablet Keyboard for Android

Especially useful for tablets in the 10-inch size range, this app splits an on-screen keyboard down the middle so you can type with your thumbs while holding your device with both hands, perfect during hectic times when you find yourself on your feet most of the day. The downside is that it has no predictive text or spell check, so it's all up to you to dot your I's and cross your T's.

News, how-to guides and more at tecca.com to help you get the most out of your technology.

2. Kid Mode

Download:Kid Mode for Android

This app will keep your children busy with games, storybooks, videos, and a drawing board while you go about your day. It could also be a great, age-appropriate way to introduce technology to curious kids. Unfortunately, you have to pay the rather hefty fee of $59.95 per year to access most of the storybooks and the parental lock function. But as the upgrade is completely optional, your child can still access most of the app's features even without paying for premium membership. Family members whom you register on the Kid Mode website can also send video mails to the app that your child can watch on your tablet.

3. Minimalistic Text

Download:Minimalistic Text for Android

This app may overwhelm you the first time you use it, as it gives you complete control over what you want a text widget to look like on your home screen. But once you learn how to tweak fonts, backgrounds, and widget types and sizes, you'll have a great tool you can use to personalize your tablet. Use Minimalistic Text to create different types of widgets like clocks, system monitor gauges, and weather and temperature monitors ? or simply to create blocks of pure text for aesthetic purposes.

4. iTriage

Download:iTriage for Android

Has anyone in your family ever been down with an illness with symptoms you've never seen before? iTriage can help you if and when that happens. It tells you what you could be suffering from, based on the area of the body that's afflicted and the symptoms you're having. The app is in no way a replacement for a doctor's diagnosis, and that's why it has a search function that you can use to find doctors who specialize in particular conditions. You also get a directory of all U.S. hospitals, clinics, and emergency care facilities with addresses that you can look up on Google Maps.

5. Lookout Security & Antivirus

Download:Lookout Security & Antivirus for Android

Aside from being able to scan your tablet to determine the presence of malware, this app can also find your tablet if it gets lost, even when its GPS is switched off. All you need to do is log into the app's web portal to initiate a search for the tablet, and you'll receive your device's location through email. You can also trigger an alarm system that sends your tablet screeching even when it's in silent mode ? for those times when you just can't seem to remember where you placed it.

6. Springpad

Download:Springpad for Android

With Springpad, you can create several to-do lists that appear as small squares on the app's interface ? think of them as the digital equivalent of Post-its on a virtual cork board. As long as you sync your tablet through wireless Internet, you can access your notes through the Springpad website on any computer. To make access even more convenient, install Springpad's Google Chrome extension or Firefox add-on.

7. Astro File Manager

Download:Astro File Manager for Android

This app, with all the features that it can offer, is a step above your native file manager. Aside from the file organizer itself, Astro has an image viewer, task killer, and file and app backup utility. The free version has ads, but they don't impede the app's functions in any way.

8. Amazon Kindle

Download: Amazon Kindle for Android

You don't need one of Amazon's e-readers to access its collection of books. The company's app is free and so easy to use ? it takes but a single click to buy a book from the store, as long as you have a credit card attached to your account. In fact, we suggest being careful while browsing books because with the simplicity of the process, you may find yourself making an accidental purchase!

Even if you don't want to use it to buy ebooks, the Kindle app could still be worth installing to be used purely as an e-reader. Besides, the Amazon store has free titles you can download, mostly classic titles. The Kindle app also comes with a built-in dictionary as well as a feature called Whispersync that you can use to sync the book you're reading across devices.

9. Retro Camera

Download:Retro Camera for Android

Even if you think it's awkward to take pictures with a device as large as a 10-inch tablet, it doesn't hurt to have a few photography apps. Retro Camera is one of the better Android photo apps that work on Honeycomb. Its free version has six different types of vintage filters, including one that resembles a Polaroid film ? sure to make retro gadget fans happy!

10. Cloudy

Download:Cloudy for Android

This is a cute physics game kids would love. Your mission is to find the best route for your paper plane so it'll reach its destination and touch all the floating stars on the field at the same time.

The best of the bunch

These 10 are but a very small fraction of the number of titles available on the Android Market. You're bound to download more free apps the longer you've had your tablet. Not all will be worthwhile, but you may find more gems out there that you'll end up keeping.

Siberian tiger escapes from China zoo

Listen

HEFEI, China, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- A Siberian tiger escaped from an unlocked cage in Wuhu, China, and roamed a public park before being shot and killed by police, officials said.

The female tiger escaped late Monday from a public zoo after a zookeeper who had fed the nine-year-old endangered animal forgot to properly lock the cage, the official state-run Xinhua news agency reported Tuesday.

The tiger frightened a number of people in the park before it was tracked down by a dozen armed police officers, who shot and killed the animal before it could attack anyone, the news agency said.

Xinhua said the incident was the latest in a series of escapes involving tigers at Chinese zoos in recent years. Most of the roaming big cats were killed by police when they weren't easily captured.

Siberian tigers are highly endangered, with about 500 estimated left living in the wilds of eastern Russia and northeastern China.

Mozilla, Google deal worth $900 million

Published: Dec. 24, 2011 at 2:55 PM

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Dec. 24 (UPI) -- U.S. Internet company Mozilla, a non-profit company, has been set up for an enormous revenue leap with a new deal with Google, sources told Web site AllThingsD.

Mozilla and Google announced Tuesday Google would remain the default search engine in Mozilla's Firefox Web browser for the next three years, but the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sources, however, said Mozilla will be paid $900 million over three years, greatly increasing its revenue, which was $123 million for 2010 -- 84 percent of which came from Google.

Google beat out Microsoft's Bing and Yahoo! for the deal, but Mozilla appears to have them to thank, as the competition for the business apparently pushed the price of the deal higher, AllThingsD reported.

Legal scholarship highlight: Analyzing the candor of Supreme Court ...

In the past two decades, criticism of Supreme Court confirmation hearings has intensified considerably. According to the prevailing wisdom, today?s nominees are more reluctant to answer questions during their Senate testimony, and the hearings have suffered as a result. Recent proceedings have been described as ?a vapid and hollow charade,? an ?exercise in obfuscation,?and even a carefully choreographed ?kabuki? dance. In short, the message from critics is clear: Nominees now say ?nothing of value? during their testimony, and the hearings are no longer what they used to be.

This trend toward nominee evasiveness allegedly began after Robert Bork?s 1987 confirmation hearings. According to that well-known account, Bork?s lengthy and candid answers doomed his nomination, and subsequent nominees, seeking to avoid a similar fate, have become much more cagey and unresponsive in their testimony. Along these lines, the approach taken by Ruth Bader Ginsburg during her 1993 confirmation proceedings is now generally regarded as paradigmatic. By declining to discuss any issue that might come before the Court, Ginsburg is thought to have charted a new course for post-Bork nominees. Indeed, the so-called ?Ginsburg Rule? ? according to which nominees invoke their right not to answer questions about potentially unsettled legal debates ? has become shorthand for the idea that contemporary nominees duck and dodge difficult questions in a way that their predecessors did not.

But how accurate is this widely accepted version of events? Have nominees really become less forthcoming in recent years? Previous studies of Supreme Court confirmation hearings have focused on changes in the topics of the questions that senators ask.? But to date, there has been no systematic analysis of how nominees respond to those questions. Therefore, while it is possible that things have gone rapidly downhill since Bork, as the conventional wisdom suggests, the evidence supporting this view has been largely anecdotal.

In our article, ?No Hints, No Forecasts, No Previews?: An Empirical Analysis of Supreme Court Nominee Candor from Harlan to Kagan, we seek to overcome this gap in our understanding of the Supreme Court confirmation process. To that end, we present the results of a content analysis of every Supreme Court confirmation hearing transcript since 1955, the year that the proceedings became a regular part of the confirmation process. For each hearing, we coded all of the exchanges between a senator and the nominee, recording things such as the type of question asked, the degree to which the answer was forthcoming, and the reasons nominees gave for not answering more fully. Using this original dataset ? nearly 11,000 exchanges in total ? we then tested a series of hypotheses about nominee responsiveness in the face of Senate questioning.

Our results show that the conventional wisdom about Supreme Court confirmation hearings needs to be rethought. First, we discovered that there has not been a dramatic decline in nominee responsiveness since the 1980s. Recent nominees, such as Samuel Alito and Elena Kagan, were just as forthcoming as many earlier nominees, and even more forthcoming than others. Second, the overall rate of responsiveness for all nominees, including those who came after Bork, is much better than generally assumed. Nominees generally answer between sixty and seventy percent of their questions in a fully forthcoming manner. By contrast, only about twenty percent of the questions get a qualified response, and outright refusal to answer rarely tops ten percent. Therefore, whether we are talking about hearings from the 1960s or the 1990s, the notion that nominees evade more questions than they answer is unfounded. Lastly, we find that there have been subtle but important changes in the types of questions that are being asked, the topics of those questions, and in the ways in which nominees answer them, and that these shifts have helped to fuel the perception that responsiveness has declined where in fact it has not.

Taken together, these findings suggest to us that Supreme Court confirmation hearings have been largely misunderstood and mischaracterized in recent years, and that whatever one may want to say about recent nominees, one should also say about many of their predecessors as well. To be sure, the hearings have changed over the past few decades: they are longer, there are more questions, and they are more partisan and ideological. But on balance, they are neither more ?vapid? nor more ?hollow? than they have always been ? a finding that we hope will generate a lively debate about the role that these hearings play in the confirmation process.

Akers sets FG record, 49ers beat Seahawks 19-17

 David Akers

By TIM BOOTH

updated 8:41 p.m. ET Dec. 24, 2011

SEATTLE - David Akers kicked his way into the NFL record book and moved the San Francisco 49ers closer to a playoff bye.

Akers made four field goals to give him 42 this season, most in league history, and San Francisco eliminated Seattle from postseason contention by holding off the Seahawks 19-17 on Saturday.

Larry Grant tackled Seattle quarterback Tarvaris Jackson from behind, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Donte Whitner with 1:07 left to seal it.

The NFC West champions remained in position for the No. 2 playoff seed and a first-round bye thanks to an impressive second-half effort on defense that was capped by Grant's hustle play.

Frank Gore had a 4-yard touchdown run on San Francisco's first drive of the second half and Akers hit a 39-yard field goal with 2:57 left to give the 49ers the lead.

Early in the fourth quarter, Akers connected from 44 yards out for his 41st field goal of the season, breaking the NFL mark set by Neil Rackers in 2005 with Arizona.

Akers also hit from 53 and 29 yards. He missed a 52-yard attempt in the first quarter and is 42 for 49 this season.

Marshawn Lynch scored on a 4-yard run with 6:41 remaining to give Seattle (7-8) a 17-16 lead. It was his 11th straight game with a score and the first touchdown rushing allowed by San Francisco (12-3) this season.

Lynch finished with 107 yards on 21 carries, the first back to run for 100 yards against the 49ers since Week 11 of the 2009 season.

San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith protected the ball as he has all season and his biggest throw set up Akers' decisive kick. On second-and-18 from his own 31, Smith threw deep for Michael Crabtree, who got just enough separation from Brandon Browner to haul in the 41-yard reception. The 49ers didn't advance any further, but were in range for Akers to give them the lead.

Smith finished 14 of 26 for 179 yards, while Crabtree had five catches for 85 yards. The bigger contributions came from Gore and his backup, Kendall Hunter. Gore finished with 83 yards rushing, while Hunter added 73 on just 12 carries.

The 49ers had 227 yards of offense in the second half and held Seattle to 72 yards. San Francisco coaches ran through the press box in the final seconds yelling, "Merry Christmas everybody!"

The 49ers could head into next week's regular-season finale at St. Louis with the No. 2 seed locked up if Atlanta wins at New Orleans on Monday night. They are still alive for the No. 1 seed, but would need Green Bay to lose its final two games.

But all San Francisco needs is a win over the lowly Rams to clinch a home playoff game and a weekend of rest.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks' three-game winning streak ended along with their playoff hopes. Seattle already needed an unlikely scenario to get to the postseason thanks to Detroit's win over San Diego on Saturday, but the loss to the 49ers dashed those hopes.

Seattle did make it interesting thanks to its special teams. Heath Farwell blocked Andy Lee's punt and the ball bounced inside the San Francisco 5 with less than 7 minutes remaining.

On the next play, Lynch scooted around the left edge and just inside the pylon, setting off a shower of Skittles flying out of the stands. The candy covered the blue-painted end zone to the point where workers with industrial blowers came out to try and clear the field. They were back minutes later with brooms and pans trying to clean up even more.

The 49ers were the first team in league history to go the first 14 games without allowing a touchdown rushing.

But Smith answered with his deep pass to Crabtree, and Seattle's final chance was thwarted by the only turnover of the game.

Lynch's 6-yard run to start the drive pushed him over the 100-yard mark, making him the first running back to top 100 yards against the 49ers since Ryan Grant did it for Green Bay in Week 11 of 2009. That snapped a streak of 36 straight games for the 49ers without allowing a 100-yard rusher.

Lynch then took a short pass from Jackson for 20 yards to the 45 at the 2-minute warning. Lynch added a 3-yard run and another swing pass to Lynch brought up third-and-3 at the San Francisco 48 with 1:18 left. Jackson was flushed from the pocket by Grant, who continued to pursue and grabbed Jackson from behind .The fumble bounced forward 10 yards, where Whitner fell on it as the San Francisco sideline burst into celebration.

Jackson finished 15 of 28 for 163 yards and a 13-yard TD pass to rookie Doug Baldwin in the first quarter.

How Your House Works: Fireplace

December 23, 2011 6:30 AM

Classic brick-and-mortar fireplaces aren't exactly hot these days, according to Joe LaVecchia of New Jersey's Abbey Hart Brick & Stone. "We used to sell a million firebricks a year in the 1970s," he says. "Now it's more like eighty or a hundred thousand."

It's not that the hearth's allure has been extinguished?it's a cost issue. Between the prerequisite concrete foundation and a mason to do the job, a traditional fireplace can cost $10,000 to $15,000 to install. Then there's efficiency. Typical fireplaces draw and vent interior air that a homeowner pays to heat with a furnace. The image of dollar signs streaming out of a chimney comes to mind.

The most common alternative today is the fuel-efficient, direct-vent gas fireplace. Carpenters can install the prefab firebox, which costs a fraction of a traditional fireplace. Still, nothing duplicates a crackling hearth. The old flame?fascinating and elemental?dies hard.

CHIMNEYS: THE INSIDE STORY

1. FLUE Smoke rises through ceramic flue liners in about 95 percent of brick chimneys, Tyler McClave of flue-maker Superior Clay says. Round models span 3 to 36 inches in diameter; rectangular flues get as big as 24 x 24. But a 12 x 12 square is typical, and two flues often run side by side in a single chimney.

2. SMOKE SHELF Wood smoke rises from the firebox and collects along the smoke shelf, a horizontal termination that prevents smoke from traveling downward from the chimney and into the house. Located about 8 inches above the top of the firebox, the shelf? has a concave surface that collects rainwater and debris.

3. DAMPER The metal door atop the firebox closes when the fireplace is dormant to seal the drafty chimney from the home interior. It's not a perfect seal, McClave says, because a refrigerator-style rubber gasket can't last in intense heat. Common-sense note: Never light a fire with the damper closed.

4. FIREBRICK Also known as refractory brick, firebrick has an inherent ability to expand and contract with rapid heating and cooling. Face brick, which clads chimneys, cracks and fails when used to line a firebox.
