behest sarasota: Inground Vs. Above Ground Swimming Pools ...

Copyright ? 2012 savvycontent.com

Nowadays, there are a lot of types, designs, and styles of swimming pools that a person can choose from. These swimming pools range from plastic, Jacuzzi, inground, or above ground. The most common, probably, are the inground and the above ground swimming pools.

Swimming pools were said to have started in Ancient Pakistan. Back then, people called these pools baths. Those pools were covered with bricks and sealed with tar sealant, to avoid any leakage. The great bath, the first of the baths was twelve meters by seven meters in area. Swimming pools gained popularity when the Greeks and Romans used it for water sport training and recreation. Pools also doubled as fish ponds. When a Roman emperor suggested a heated swimming pool, more and more aristocrats wanted to build a heated swimming pool in their estate. It was not until the 19th century, when the British established various swimming clubs, that the swimming pool became largely popular among the masses. Since then, many have adapted swimming pools in their homes and villages.

There have always been talks about the difference between the inground and the above ground swimming pools. When a person is debating about what kind of pool he should install in his property, there are a lot of things he should consider.

First, the owner should think about the amount of space he has available for the pool. The inground pool takes more space than the above ground pool. While inground pools are permanent, once the owner gets tired of having an above ground swimming pool he can just uninstall it any time. Above ground pools are more cost-effective and budget friendly compared to the inground pool. Not only that, but some states also have laws and taxes regarding inground pools. Since the taxes are big, most families prefer the above ground pool because there are no necessary taxes that go with it.

The people who will use the pool and activities that will be done there are very important things to consider when a person is deciding the pool that he should install. Although the above ground pool is very convenient, they may not be good for swim training and other water sports. On the other hand, the inground pool need heaters because they can get cold at night, while the above ground pool does not need their water to be heated, and the need for a heater will depend on the location of the pool and how it is installed.

Helpful information for Business to business Marketing and ...

Massive Sales Results @ 1/2 the investment

Ought to B2B marketers change their strategies throughout a recession? Does a recession always mean entrepreneurs have to work also harder to find ways to accomplish more with a smaller amount? Can a recession develop opportunity for smart marketers to grow and prosper? These are some of the matters I recently explored over a panel at the SMX Superior conference in Dallas.

Are we in a recession?

First off, let me clarify I do not think we?re inside a recession in the US * yet. A recession requires two quarters of negative growth in GDP, and Q4 last year noticed 0.6% growth even though preliminary numbers regarding Q1 this year were 2.9% growth (Bureau involving Economic Statistics).

Therefore we may not yet have a recession, but instances are growing more and more difficult for consumers. The subprime mess is actual, exorbitant energy as well as food costs are slicing into discretionary spending, and the weakening dollar can be importing inflation to economy. According to Generate an income Spent My Stimulus, the $152 billion stimulus bundle is going primarily to cut back consumer debt or to purchase higher gas and food costs, my partner and i.e. it is not planning to stimulate incremental paying.

What this means is that we will be in the worst probable non-recession. Prior downturns avoided transforming into a (global) recession due to the resilient American buyer. This time, it looks just like we won?t have that saving grace ? meaning points may still get worse before they get better.

What does this imply for B2B marketing techniques?

Fewer consumers indicates less demand; significantly less demand means that initiatives to stimulate demand (i.e. internet marketing) are less effective general. Put simply, when people obtain less, advertisers reduce expenses. According to research firm Veronis Suhler Stevenson, US advertising fallen 9% in the 2001 recession while Internet advertising dropped a whopping 27%. I should point out that this slowdown refers to business-to-business marketers as well because of second- and higher-order effects, my partner and i.e. as customer spending drops, nokia?s that sell to these consumers reduce his or her spending as well.

However, these overall numbers hide two crucial facts:

Branding and other types of push marketing fall in a slowdown, although direct marketing has a tendency to rise. When finances are cut, your channels with the the very least ability to measure marketing ROI are reduce especially hard since companies shift shelling out to more measurable channels. Investment financial institution Cowen and Company checked out the last six recessions because 1950 and found that shelling out for direct marketing really grew during six to eight recessions.

This time is different pertaining to online marketing. In the 2001 recession, online marketing was still being unproven and got caught in the downward failure of the Internet in general. Today, the trend to be able to shift advertising dollars to measurable online channels is verified and won?t disappear in the near future. So online marketing won?t crater such as last time, but it also isn?t defense from a slowdown. In fact, eMarketer recently reduced it?s 2008 estimate for individuals online advertising to $25.Eight billion. That is a 7% reduction from their prior estimate ? showing the impact of the economic downturn ? but it?s important to note that it is still 23% more than 2007?s total. In other words, the recession may slow down the growth of online marketing, but it?s still growing at a considerable pace.

What this means is a recession will speed up the decline involving interruption-based mass advertising that shouts your information to customer. Instead we will see increased increase in measurable and relationship-based techniques such as search marketing, marketing with email, lead nurturing, and internet-based communities.

A economic downturn can also create opportunity for the companies that are more efficient at turning advertising and marketing investments into revenue, since there will be much less competition overall. In the study of Ough.S. recessions, McGraw-Hill Research discovered that business-to-business firms that maintained or increased advertising expenditures during the 1981-1982 recession averaged drastically higher sales development than those that removed or decreased advertising and marketing. In fact, by ?85 companies that were hostile recession advertisers became their revenue around 2.5X faster compared to those that reduced their own advertising.

Seven advice for B2B marketing after a slowdown

Given these kind of macro economic trends, just how should you allocate your current marketing budget ? and time? Here is my definitive help guide B2B marketing within a downturn:

1. Employ lead management to maximise the value of each lead. In a recession, risk-adverse buyers take even longer than normal to research potential purchases. When you first identify a fresh prospect (regardless of whether they downloaded a whitepaper, stopped by your booth in a tradeshow, or signed up for a free trial) they are in all likelihood still in the awareness or research period and are not yet able to engage with one of your sales reps. What this means is you need lead scoring to spot which leads are very engaged, and lead nurturing to develop associations with qualified prospects that aren?t yet ready to engage with sales. Without these kinds of capabilities, as many as 95% associated with qualified prospects who are not but sales-ready never end up changing into a sales opportunity. These prospects are usually valuable corporate resources that you worked difficult to acquire ? so in a down economic climate you need to do everything possible to maximize value from their store. Implementing even a easy automated lead patient program can deliver a 4-fold improvement within the conversion of brings into sales opportunities over time. That?s a extraordinary improvement marketing return! Net-net: Companies that can do a more satisfactory job of managing sales opportunities and developing early-stage prospective customers into sales prepared leads will be in the top position to prosper in a downturn.

Only two. Focus on your house record. In a recession, you may have less money to spend about acquiring new customers. The answer is simple: spend more time internet marketing to (and building relationships with) the people you already know. Some activities that can help you get the most from your existing relationships incorporate lead nurturing strategies, creating new content material to offer to active prospects, and cleaning and augmenting your current marketing lead databases with progressive profiling.

Several. Build and optimize landing pages. When instances are tough, it?s more valuable than ever to maximize your return on your advertising and marketing. Whether you are using Ppc, banners, sponsorships, or email promotions, a dedicated landing page may be the single most effective way to make a click in to a prospect. MarketingSherpa?s Landing Page Guide book shows that relevant web page can easily double conversion rates versus sending ticks to the home page, and also testing your pages can easily increase conversions through another 48% or more. Collectively, these tactics on your own can result in 2.5X more leads for every dollar you spend, something that?s guaranteed to look good in challenging times. However, MarketingSherpa also reviews that most companies are generally under-using this important approach: just 44% of mouse clicks for B2B organizations are directed to your home page, not a unique landing page, and of B2B companies that use landing pages, 62% have six or even fewer total pages. A recession is perhaps the best time to focus on some of these fundamentals.

4. Content pertaining to later in the acquiring cycle. When buying slows, you need to focus more than ever on making sure you might be finding the prospects who?re actually ready to purchase ? or even better, cause them to finding you. A great technique to do this is to focus your offers upon content that will attract someone who?s actually trying to find a solution (as opposed to believed leadership and best procedures content, which can interest prospects who may well one day have a need to have but are not currently searching). Examples of this kind of written content can include ?Top 5 Things to ask a Potential Vendor? whitepapers; buyers manuals and checklists; analyst evaluations; and so on.

A few. Appeal to the worried buyer. A recession could mean more risk-adverse buyers, which can lead to a tendency to select ?safe? solutions. This is for large established companies, but it means young companies need to do as part of your to reassure and make trust. Tactically, this means including customer references, reviews, expert opinions, prizes, and other validation in your marketing. Strategically, an economic depression means fewer chance takers and visionaries, so have a lesson from Geoffrey Moore?s Traversing the Chasm and use approaches that appeal to well-known pragmatists: industry-specific marketing tactics as well as solutions; vertical consumer references; relevant relationships and alliances; and whole product marketing.

Six. Align sales and marketing. Today?s potential customers start their process by interacting with advertising and online channels some time before they ever consult sales representative. This means companies must integrate advertising and sales efforts to produce a single revenue direction. The old days of well-designed silos and poor interaction between the two departments must end. The tougher selling surroundings, driven by a a downturn, means this is far more true than ever.

7. Don?t be a cost middle. Most executives these days think that Sales provides revenue and Marketing is a cost centre. Marketers are to some extent to blame for part of this attitude, since when we utilize metrics such as ?cost per lead? we frame the discussion in terms of costs, not in terms of effect on revenue. More quietly, using language such as ?marketing spending? and ?marketing budget? instead of ?marketing investment? perpetuates these beliefs. In the recession, marketing requirements more than ever to change these kinds of perceptions. This means that advertising investments must be validated with a rigorous organization case and should be amortized over the entire ?useful life? in the investment. And it implies marketing must boost marketing accountability by simply demonstrating the impact of each marketing task on pipeline as well as revenue. Of course, that is easier said than done, but that doesn?t mean you shouldn?t try. Even small actions, like reports that report the total opportunity worth for each lead resource or campaign, can certainly produce a big impact.

Bottom line

Even if we aren?t in a very recession, we are looking for some tough economic times ? plus an economic slowdown means a tendency to scale back internet marketing spending. However, research shows that a downturn produces opportunity to accelerate growth faster than the competition. This means it may be the best time to step up your own marketing ? at the very least in quality or else quantity. The marketers that focus on getting the most out of every dollar spent and on demonstrating marketing?s affect revenue and direction will be well placed to come out of the slump looking like a legend.

How to Manage Small Business Accounting | Accounting Software

February 28th, 2012

Small business accounting has a difference from big business accounting. Small business accounting is important in order to maintain a successful business. Therefore it is very important to truly understand the method of optimizing the use of funds for business transactions. With the right decision and evaluation of your competitors, you are on your way to be better in managing your business.

First of all, you need three basic account reports for your business. They are the cash flow statement, profit and loss report and balance sheet. The use of the balance sheet is to show you the worth of your business, your liabilities and your assets in the company for the whole year. You need profit and loss account to keep updated with how much you earn and how much you have spent. Basically, a report that has high profit and low loss is a sign of a growing business. However, if vice versa, you might be having troubles with your business.

The easiest way you can use to keep track of your accounting is perhaps through cash receipts. This is less complicated and you can implement this easily for your business. Otherwise, you can practice another method known as accrual method. This is slightly confusing for some business owners as every sale that has been made will be recorded as ?accounts receivable? regardless of payment being made or pending.

Still, there are many software in the market that can help you organize your accounting system effectively. These software are easy to use and the best part is you don?t have to waste much time on the software. First, install the software to your PC and you are ready to start. It is really easy because you can learn everything from the guide book. Your staff will be happy when handling the accounting system.

However, the last step is to be used if you have no idea how to do these without help. Seek the help of a professional accounting firm to help you solve your problem. You might think that they are going to cost you a fortune but look around and you might get some great deals from these firms. Seeing that you have a small business, I am sure they will charge a reasonable price for the services they offer. It is a sacrifice you will have to make in order to make sure you company runs smoothly.

Swingers ? What many lies in this fantasy world | hotpress.in

The swingers we have regarded over many years of operating swinger clubs has taught us that swingers originate from every sector regarding society. This makes swinger events very egalitarian affairs in which anyone from guidebook worker to company executive turns up as well as plays with others that appeal much more as a result of sexual chemistry in comparison with anything to do with way of living or social qualifications.

Swingers: Personality Traits

There are some frequent factors that we have noticed in the personality or even character traits of swingers. These traits which cause a man or woman to swing are highlighted below:

Over disciplinarian childhood experiences: The most obvious one being, a sense of being liberated from an over restrictive society. Quite often, the swinger?s childhood has an effect on were overly prohibitive, particularly with regards to sexual matters. It therefore looks quite likely that the baby grows up to be a mature who decides in order to rebel against those influences and compensates for all that they think they were denied since children. In view in this, it is hardly shocking that the vast majority of stellen we have now met express the worry of being found out, particularly by elderly parents, as the greatest problem they have about their life-style.

Sex as adventure: Swinging is often described as ?Recreational Sex? and it does appear to be that many swingers are enthusiastic by the buzz or perhaps sense of adventure that form of recreation delivers. Instead of taking up sports activities with a high actual physical risk element, it?s as if the swinger possesses chosen the sport of sex instead. The chance of being found out is actually part of the buzz. So whilst it is so generally listed as the finest fear, it can also be the turn-on of the sort provided by driving a car of falling to get a rock climber.
Increase sexual interest and rejuvenate lovemaking: Other more obvious ulterior motives can easily be found in the regular swinger?s make up. Having a higher than average sex drive may be the first motive you think of. Although we have surely come across people who claim they swing for the reverse reason. (i.age. To seek stimulation to get a low sex drive).

Check out homosexuality tendencies: Other large ranking motives are usually voyeurism and bisexuality. Voyeurism is common amid swingers and so is the need to explore or please bisexual tendencies. The latter will be openly expressed and incredibly much encouraged among female swingers but swinger groups often discourage bisexuality between males. Consequently it is unusual to hear males openly discussing any bisexual tendencies they may get.

Swingers: After Effects and Actuality

There has often also been hue and weep on issues associated with emotional trauma and also broken relations because of swinging. However, the umbrella organization known as the North American Swing Pub Association (NASCA) (now NASCA Global) was formed to execute research to gather correct information about swinging routines all across America. Several subjective scientific study into swinging may be conducted in the USA since late 1960s. The most up-to-date study, based on a web questionnaire addressed in order to visitors of lifestyle-related web-sites surprisingly found swingers are usually happier in their human relationships than normal couples.

London's Eco-Routemaster launches today, magical mystery tour ends in Clapton

Very lucky commuters using the number 38 between Victoria and Hackney will find themselves touring the nation's capital on the first of London's new Eco-Routemasters. The first paying passengers journey aboard the vehicle at midday today, which was designed in London and built in Ireland, ending a process that started in July 2008. A further seven of the hybrid buses will arrive at a rate of one every fortnight until the fleet (of eight out of the 68 needed for the route) is complete at the end of May. The fuel-efficient vehicle gets 11.6mpg, nothing to your average Prius, but a miracle to a city whose buses normally average half that. It will also mark a return for the good old Bus Conductor, except all they'll be responsible for is ensuring people board and exit safely from that legendary rear door -- if you want a ticket, you'll still have to talk to the driver.

Home Insurance and Pipes that Go 'Pop' in the Night

This is a guest post by Suzanne Clemenz, who writes for Insure.com. Suzanne designed her passive solar home and remodeled two others. She worked with architects and contractors on floor plans, electrical work, painting, windows, flooring installations, flood prevention walls and stonework, major drainage issues, an irrigation system, and landscaping.

It?s alarming to be awakened by the distant, mysterious sound of running water. But on Sunday, November 6, 2011, that?s what happened to me.

Two steps out of bed my toes sank into cold, soggy carpet. I quickly discovered that my laundry room, kitchen, and about one-third of the living area were an inch deep in expanding water.

The recessed hose bibs behind the clothes washer were dry. So was the hot water tank. A river ran from the laundry room to the garage door and driveway. The drainage swale that crosses my front and side yards was spilling water into my backyard?s natural arroyo.

Soaked floors.

Dressing hastily, I turned off the outside whole-house water supply. Then, knowing most people wouldn?t respond until Monday, I did the following:

  1. Moved lighter furniture into unaffected areas.
  2. Spent two hours with my shop vacuum slurping up water.
  3. Called my neighbor, who discovered that the metal ?made in China? coupling low on the back of my washing machine had burst. Not the rubber hose, mind you!
  4. Called the State Farm Insurance claims department at 9 a.m. State Farm opened a home insurance claim, recording all the details. They okayed my calling the mold remediation contract I had used on a claim earlier in the year.
  5. Left a message for my local insurance agent.
  6. Called the licensed mold/water/fire/sewage remediation contractor I?d used months earlier for a frozen, burst in my garage.

I spent two more hours vacuuming water ? 22 gallons total. My kitchen counter tops were stacked high with belongings, so at 2 p.m. I headed for a nearby cafe, keeping my receipt for insurance reimbursement since my kitchen was not usable.

The contractor called late in the afternoon with the comforting words ?I?ll be there in the morning.? He said to keep the house at 70 degrees and set up fans aimed at the master bedroom and closet carpet. I moved survival gear to my guest bedroom and bathroom. The only livable places were my home office and guest bedroom.

Flood remediation
The contractor and crew arrived early Monday and moved heavy furniture to unaffected areas. Some of the equipment they used included the following:

  • The magic meter. The contractor?s hand-held meter read moisture levels several inches into any surface. He took readings from floors, baseboards, and walls.
  • The hot octopus. The crew popped off baseboards and drilled a line of holes every 8 inches in soaked drywall areas. The contractor set up his Injectidry machine to help dry the drywall. A flexible mustard yellow tube snaked from the machine into affected rooms. About 63 smaller tubes connected it to the drilled wall holes. Heated air began blowing into the walls and under the kitchen cupboards. This is the first line of defense against mold formation.
  • The blowhards. A powerful floor fan (without heat) forcefully blew air underneath the bedroom carpet until it billowed across the bedroom and into the walk-in closet. Six similar fans were set up elsewhere, as needed.
  • The tear-jerker, A blue R2-D2-sized dehumidifier was set up at a central location.

All the machinery howled like a pack of wolves 24/7 for the next five days, after which only one small area needed more drying.

Injectidry machine dries the drywall.

In my dry Arizona climate it takes five to eight days for mold to form if not immediately mitigated. In humid climates there?s only a day or two. But the seams of the laminate flooring were buckling. There was concern that mold could form under the floating vinyl floor in the kitchen and laundry room. The adjuster said, ?New floors. No question.? Eight days after the flood I had a check from State Farm Insurance covering the contractor?s remediation services.

Lengthy restoration
Floor floods have a penchant for starting on or near holidays. My hopes for a restored home by Christmas disappeared. My sofa and TV had been extricated from the living room?s furniture stash, so I had a place to relax. But for 10 weeks my clothing was in three rooms and bathing rituals were divided between two bathrooms. The disruption was tiring.

Fortunately, the contractor?s crew members are courteous, quiet, hard-working perfectionists. I found a 38-year-old company that did all the repair work except the flooring. Someone from the crew unfailingly calls if they are running a bit late. They were never no-shows. The contractor sent the insurance adjuster a restoration estimate once remediation was finished.

Installing new baseboards.

Old baseboards couldn?t be matched and installing new ones was surprisingly work intensive. Drywall was patched, sanded, textured and painted. Baseboards were measured, cut, fitted, and tacked on until the flooring was finished. Then came the final fitting, touch-up painting, and caulking. I had a check in hand from State Farm when the preliminary baseboard work was done. Ditto for the flooring. I upgraded the flooring a bit for a glue-down vinyl plank flooring to minimize any future damage caused by my apparent bad water karma. State Farm?s check for the final work arrived about 10 days after job completion.

Ounce of prevention
I had the best contractors, crew, and insurance company imaginable, yet couldn?t avoid a state of upheaval for 10 weeks. State Farm may cancel my policy or raise my rates at policy renewal time because I had two claims in one year. If so, my agent says I?ll have time to shop around for other coverage. The prior frozen pipe damage created $7,000 worth of damage. This claim was closer to $20,000. State Farm has been excellent. I?d rather stay with it. (Here?s more on how home insurance pays for water damage, from Insure.com.)

Braided, steel washing machine hoses with brass fittings.

The contractor?s first restoration purchase was braided, steel washing machine hoses with brass fittings, made in the U.S. and with a 20-year warranty. My cost was much disruption plus about $2,000 out of pocket for my deductible and flooring upgrades.

You don?t want this experience. Good news: $70 of good machine hoses can keep you high and dry.

Have you had to deal with a an insurance claim for a major home repair? Did you stick with the insurance company at renewal time?

Last GI missing in Iraq killed by Iran-backed group

A Shiite extremist group handed over a simple wooden casket containing the remains of the last U.S. soldier missing in Iraq, a prominent Iraqi lawmaker said Monday, drawing a close to a case that has anguished the American's family since his 2006 disappearance.

Shiite lawmaker Sami al-Askari, a close ally of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, said the remains of Staff Sgt. Ahmed al-Taie were turned over last week as part of a prisoner exchange agreement between the Iraqi government and the militant group Asaib Ahl al-Haq.

The Pentagon confirmed Sunday that it had recently received remains that were verified as al-Taie's. But al-Askari's comments provide the first confirmation that Asaib Ahl al-Haq, an Iranian-backed insurgent group, was responsible for the 2006 kidnapping of al-Taie after the Iraqi-born soldier sneaked out of the heavily guarded Green Zone in Baghdad to visit his wife and family on a Muslim holiday.

Al-Askari said Asaib Ahl al-Haq last week acknowledged killing al-Taie within a year of his October 2006 abduction. He said he did not know exactly when al-Taie was killed.

After search, Army identifies remains of last unaccounted soldier in Iraq

In an interview with The Associated Press, al-Askari said he supervised the negotiations for al-Taie's body and was present when Asaib Ahl al-Haq turned over a simple wooden casket containing the remains to Iraqi authorities on Feb. 22. He said the casket was immediately transferred to the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

"The Iraqi authorities did not open the casket, which was not heavy," al-Askari said. He said the negotiations for al-Taie's body had been taking place "for a while."

Al-Taie moved to the United States at age 12 after his family left Iraq in the late 1970s, when Saddam Hussein was ascending to power. His family described him as a pilot and airplane mechanic who lived with his parents in Ann Arbor, Mich.

He met his wife during a trip to Iraq shortly after Saddam's fall from power in 2003. In December 2004, he joined an Army reserve program for native speakers of Arabic and other strategic languages, and deployed a year later to Iraq, where he worked with a Provincial Reconstruction Team in Baghdad until he was kidnapped in 2006.

At the time he was seized, kidnappings for ransom or political motives, mostly of Iraqis but also many foreigners, were common. The February 2006 bombing of a Shiite mosque by Sunni insurgents caused retaliatory bloodshed to spiral, and death squads roamed Iraq's streets.

Often met wife in secret
Al-Taie's relatives say he often met secretly with his wife at her family's home despite warnings that he was in danger of being kidnapped.

After al-Taie disappeared on Oct., 23, 2006, American commanders immediately launched a massive manhunt for him. About a week later, a family member received a ransom demand and was shown a grainy video on a hand-held device of a man whom extremists claimed was al-Taie.

Bomb attack on Shiite pilgrims in Iraq kills 50, wounds 100

Relatives demanded better proof, and negotiations with various intermediaries lasted for years. Al-Taie was last seen four months after his abduction in a video posted on the Internet by a Shiite militant faction called the Ahl al-Bayt Brigades, which is linked to Asaib Ahl al-Haq.

Asaib Ahl al-Haq, or Band of the People of Righteousness, is a Shiite militant group in Iraq. It generally relies on Iran, the regional Shiite power, for support, including around $5 million in cash and weapons each month, according to Iraqi and U.S. intelligence officials. Officials believe there are fewer than 1,000 Asaib Ahl al-Haq militiamen, and their leaders live in Iran.

The Pentagon has said it recently received remains that have been confirmed as al-Taie's at the U.S. military mortuary in Dover, Del. It offered no details, and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad referred questions Monday to the Pentagon.

A U.S. official with knowledge of the situation said al-Taie's body arrived in Dover Feb. 25 and his family was notified early on Feb. 26. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the sensitivity of the details of family notification.

Al-Askari said al-Taie's remains were handed over as part of an amnesty exchange agreement with Asaib Ahl al-Haq, under which the group will not face criminal prosecution or penalties if it disarms or turns over prisoners.

"There will be no persecution or legal measures against the Asaib people in the case of al-Taie," al-Askari said.

Al-Taie's uncle, Entifadh Qanbar, expressed resigned dismay Monday that al-Taie's killers might not be punished, but said he had not yet been notified by any government about the circumstances surrounding the killing.

"I have to see the details but I don't think a murder should stand without the law taking place," Qanbar said Monday in a telephone interview from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. "Everybody who commits murders should face court."

He indicated that Iraqi authorities should take responsibility for prosecuting the killing. "I don't know if the United States could do anything without the Iraqis," Qanbar said.

Samsung Announces Galaxy Note 10.1 And Projector Smartphone

samsung-galaxy-tab-2-tablet-0 (1)The vast event that is Mobile World Congress (all our coverage will be here) is just shifting into first gear. Although the show doesn't officially start until tomorrow various announcements are coming out today. The latest is about some new devices from Samsung, which hasn't been shy and retiring with its huge stand here at the Fira venue. Incidentally, this is where, once, George Orwell paraded with fellow Socialist troops during the Spanish revolutionary fight against the Fascists. Heady days I can tell you, and we'll be working that metaphor as much as possible. Android versus Apple? You get the drift. So, Samsung's latest Android Tablet is going to be the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 to replace it's first Galaxy Tab (pictured left). A 7.0-inch variant was announced a week ago (which makes one wonder why people bother with MWC at all if they are going to leak stories ahead of time?). Similar to the 5-inch Samsung Galaxy Note, these devices have a stylus.

Historic black church rises from ashes of Civil War

Like most blacks in the pre-Civil War South, the African Americans of the old Colonial town of Hampton, Va., had few choices when it came to worship.

Enslaved or free, illiterate or learned, they crowded shoulder to shoulder in the rear balconies of the white churches, forced there by laws that barred them from gathering by themselves. And despite outnumbering their white brethren by 9 to 1 in such places as Hampton Baptist Church, they had little say over how they practiced their faith.

Those long years of silence and submission came to an end with the upheaval that rocked this historic town during the Civil War.

Founded by a pioneering band of free and enslaved blacks, one of the first independent African American churches born in the conflict between North and South rose from the ashes of a place that had been abandoned and burned by its rebellious white population. So deeply did the roots of First Baptist Church take hold in this seemingly unpromising soil that its legacy can still be felt nearly 150 years later.

"I don't know how they viewed sitting in the 'Negro pews' back then. But the fact is that they did fill the balcony. They wanted a place to worship," former Hampton University historian and church member William Wiggins says.

"But there was always this longing for a church of their own where they could worship in their own way. And when the war gave them the chance, they took it right away."

Few Southern locales had a black population more prepared to exploit a white power vacuum ? and the crowds of runaway slaves ? than Hampton, located in southeastern Virginia.

More than 200 free African Americans lived here in 1860, says historian Robert Engs, author of a groundbreaking study of Civil War Hampton called "Freedom's First Generation." And many were literate and skilled property owners.

Among them was Thomas Peake, husband of pioneering free black teacher Mary Peake, who died in 1862 after founding one of the first schools to teach the town's burgeoning numbers of runaway slaves.

Also prominent was free black preacher William B. Taylor, a carpenter who hired out his time to purchase his own freedom and that of his wife and daughter.

For many years before the war, Taylor had served as the de facto head of Hampton's "colored Baptist Church," where he'd earned permission to perform nominal marriages between slaves. He'd also won fame as a "fiery exhorter," practicing his oratorical skills at the 1856 dedication of Williamsburg's black First Baptist Church as well as in clandestine worship meetings held in and around Hampton.

In his audiences were many literate, self-employed slaves who hoped to imitate Taylor's example.

"Hampton was very different ? almost cosmopolitan in some ways ? compared to other places in the South, and the blacks here were very different too," Wiggins said.

Meeting first in the ruins of Hampton in 1863, the congregation soon began building in the Pee Dee section of town on land obtained from the daughter and son-in-law of free black Revolutionary War hero Cesar Tarrant.

They moved to a new and much larger structure on North King Street not long after the war ended, providing more than 1,000 members with not only spiritual guidance but also a pathway to political power and economic independence.

During the Reconstruction Era, Deacon Thomas Peake won posts as deputy sheriff, school trustee and head of the county poorhouse. Deacon R.M. Smith served as Commissioner of Revenue and Deacon Isaiah Lyons sat in the state Senate.

Sister Harriet Taylor co-founded the United Order of Tents as the nation's oldest fraternal benevolent group for black women. She was later was buried alongside her husband ? the charismatic and widely admired Rev. Taylor ? in the graveyard of the town's most prominent white church.

Pastor Richard Spiller helped establish the People's Savings and Loan Assn., which financed hundreds of black homes, in the church's basement.

Such post-war influence has led scholars like Engs to note "that there was more prestige to being a junior deacon at First Baptist Church than a senior deacon somewhere else."

"There's this great myth about what slavery did to blacks ? this distorted idea that it left them unprepared for freedom," he adds.

"But people here showed that wasn't true. They knew exactly what to do when they got the chance."

IndoGolf News: Under Par

Indonesia still has a long way to go in joining the ranks of golfing tourism nations.

Tourism is a serious business: Not only is it one of the world?s fastest-growing and largest industries, it?s also a major employer and important source of foreign exchange income. In short, tourism is an important driver of economic progress, which is why governments around the world work so hard to attract tourists.

And then there is the important subsector of golf tourism. Global golf tourism is a US$20 billion business, thanks to the approximately 50 million golf tourists around the world.

So since Indonesia is home to about 160 golf courses, you?d expect that we?d be enjoying a sizeable slice of the golf tourism pie, wouldn?t you? And yet, we?re not.

In fact, according to the Asia Golf Tourism Report by Paul Myers from Asian Travel Media, Bangkok, released last October, Indonesia isn?t even getting the crumbs.

According to the report, Thailand is the regional leader in inbound golf tourism, followed by Malaysia and then China. Thailand?s position at the top is attributed to its decade-long efforts in diligently and consistently marketing its high-quality yet affordable golf offering. What?s more, golf tourism in Thailand has the support of major players in the country?s tourism industry, such as the Tourist Authority of Thailand, regional tourism promotion offices, Thai Airways and the private sector, including (golf) tour and travel operators and the hotel industry.

According to figures released by the Tourist Authority of Thailand in November, about 600,000 of the 19 million foreign tourists expected to visit the country this year will be coming to play golf. That makes Thailand the third most popular golf destination in the world. Spain, with one million golfers a year, is the world?s number one golf tourism magnet, with Britain a strong second.

And golf tourism is a lucrative segment of the industry: On average, golf tourists spend three times as much as other tourists. The typical foreign golfer spends an estimated US$3,300 on a golf trip to Thailand, which, according to Tourist Authority of Thailand forecasts, translates to a value of US$2 billion in 2012.

To grow tourist arrivals, next to perfect infrastructure and interesting and clean and well maintained tourist sites, a constant update and/or introduction of new tourist attractions is needed. In Asia, Singapore is the prime example for continuously updating its tourism product. By putting in place the Singapore Flyer, Resort World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands, to name just a few, the island state was able to attract more than 10 million visitors in 2011.

There is less information on Malaysia, but it is estimated to attract just over 100,000 foreign golfers a year, generating annual foreign currency income of more than US$250 million. As for China, although most golfers there come from the emerging middle and upper class, diligent global marketing is attracting increasing numbers of golfers from other countries to China?s fabulous courses, especially to the renowned Mission Hills in southern China where golfers can play 12 courses in the one region.

The report also mentions golf tourism developments by other countries in Southeast Asia. In Vietnam, where, in the past five years, more than 50 courses have been opened or started to be built, inbound golf tourism to Vietnam is estimated to attract about 10,000 foreign golfers a year. Even Laos is attracting thousands of golfers, despite having only four major golf resorts, whereas Cambodia, like Vietnam, has outsourced its golf tourism marketing to American-owned companies.

What About Indonesia?

And what did this new and important report on golf tourism in Asia have to say about Indonesia?

Absolutely nothing.

This may come as a surprise to those fortunate enough to be familiar with Indonesia?s fabulous world of golf and leisure. But it was no surprise to me.

After all, for many years ? ever since I started Golf Promo Indonesia and www.indogolf.com in 1998 ? I have unsuccessfully sought to convince stakeholders in the local golf and tourism industries to join forces to promote Indonesia to the world as a golf tourism destination. But bringing together our golf industry and our national and regional tourism promotion offices has turned out to ?mission impossible?.

This is truly a wasted opportunity, when Indonesia?s golf tourism products equal or surpass those of our neighbors in so many ways.

Our golf courses and facilities are just as good as those in Thailand, Malaysia or China. We even have our own version of ?Mission Hills? ? Jakarta?s Jagorawi toll road gives easy access to 17 fabulous courses. Golf courses here were designed by the best in the business and are located in stunning natural settings. They are accessible, high quality and well maintained. They are managed in a highly professional manner and are ready to welcome even the most spoiled golf traveler. Most club houses are of five-star quality, and the amenities on offer are exemplary.

Then there are our caddies, who are in a class of their own: They?re pretty, friendly and, most importantly, they are very knowledgeable. What?s more, they are proficient in English and fun to be with.

What?s more, weekday golf in Indonesia is relatively inexpensive (with the exception of Bali), and a golf ztrip can be nicely combined with the riches of leisure, art and culture on offer here, all supported by the nation?s world-class hospitality industry and famous ?friendly smile?.

Nevertheless, Indonesia is completely unknown as a world-class golf destination. The golf and tourism industries are missing out on a potentially highly lucrative opportunity, and it?s their own fault.

There is no real solidarity among the owners and managers of golf courses here, despite golf associations and regular meetings to discuss daily business. Rather, they are too busy competing with each other to join together to attract some of those 50 million golf tourists and, in doing so, add significant revenue to their business.

Despite having had a golfer at its helm, the tourism ministry appears to have no idea of how golf could contribute to tourism in Indonesia; this ignorance is reflected in regional tourism promotion offices such as the Jakarta Tourism Promotion Office (JTPO), which show no interest in working with local stakeholders to let the world know about Jakarta?s fabulous world of golf. To be fair, the JTPO did commission a ?Road map for Indonesia golf? ? but from a UK company, as if those in the Indonesian golf industry don?t have the knowledge to contribute.

It is unforgivable that Indonesia does not get a mention in the important report on golf tourism in Asia. That golf in Indonesia is a valuable tourism asset seems blindingly obvious ? as does the suggestion that we should capitalize on this asset by promoting it to the world.

Now surely is the time for the main players in Indonesia?s golf and tourism industries to come together with the tourism ministry and the regional tourism boards of Jakarta, Surabaya and Bali to create a sustainable golf tourism strategy that will secure Indonesia?s position as one of Asia?s most attractive golf destinations. If not, Indonesia will continue to languish as merely a ?world-class golf destination in waiting?.

New theory shows that neither birth nor death stops a flock

Friday, February 24, 2012

Neither births nor deaths stop the flocking of organisms. They just keep moving, says theoretical physicist John J. Toner of the University of Oregon. The notion, he says, has implications in biology and eventually could point to new cancer therapies.

Picture any scenario in which self-propelled organisms -- animals, birds, bacteria, molecules within cells, cancer cells, fish, and even tiny plastic rods on a vibrating table -- move as a swarm or flock in the same direction. Eighteen years ago, Toner co-developed two equations that together provide a complete theory of flocking for "immortal" flocks -- those in which creatures are not being born and dying while the moving.

Now he has extended that work to include the effects of birth and death.

The new equations are as complete a description of flocks as the Navier-Stokes equation is of fluid dynamics. This equation, named after French physicist and engineer Claude-Louis Navier and British scientist George Gabriel Stokes applies equally well to all fluids; air, water, honey and the oil from the Gulf of Mexico disaster are all described by it. All of the differences between these very different fluids can be incorporated into the Navier-Stokes equation by changing the value of one number, called "the viscosity." Large values apply to sticky fluids like honey and oil, while smaller values describe air and water.

The Navier-Stokes equation has been used successfully for more than a century in the design of aircraft, automobiles, plumbing and power stations.

Toner's equations likewise work for all flocks, and contain some numbers that must be adjusted to account for differences between different kinds of flocks. The earlier work on immortal flocks has been applied to the flocking behavior of birds, particularly studies of starlings in Rome by Andrea Cavagna and Irene Giardina.

In a new paper -- "Birth, Death, and Flight: A Theory of Malthusian Flocks," published in the Feb. 24 issue of the journal Physical Review Letters -- Toner shows that flocking is even robust against birth and death. The finding, he said, is especially important for many other organisms that flock, especially bacteria, which may contain millions of individuals that are constantly dying and being replaced by the reproduction of others as the swarm moves.

"A flock can keep moving in the same direction for times much longer than the lifetime of any individual member," said Toner, a member of the UO Institute of Theoretical Science and a professor in the physics department. "Individuals are being born and dying but their direction and motion can persist much longer than the lifetime of any individual creature."

Secondly, he added, the density changes of such a "mortal flock" -- where some members are leaving by death and joining by birth -- create persistent but predictable fluctuations. "Birth and death are very important in microbiological flocks, such as swarms of bacteria or in collections of self-propelled molecules that flock in most living cells."

This fundamental new knowledge already is applicable to understanding the movement of molecules within cells -- in particular, mitotic spindles that launch the machinery of cell development and division, Toner said.

In mitotic spindles, individual molecules live for only about 20 minutes, but spindles live and continue their work for days, he said. "The motion continues as dead molecules are replaced by newly synthesized molecules, as well as by molecules which immigrate in to take their places."

Through the application of his new theory to the study of mitotic spindles, Toner said, it may be possible to design specifically targeted cancer therapies that, unlike current chemotherapies, would only kill aberrant, or diseased cells, and allow desirable, healthy ones to live. "In reality, such applications are a long way off," said Toner, whose research is supported by the National Science Foundation.

"This study shows us how fundamental physics and mathematics deployed to explain an everyday occurrence in nature can spin off with potentially life-saving medical applications," said Kimberly Andrews Espy, vice president for research and innovation at the UO. "This cutting-edge research conducted at the University of Oregon is another great example of the widespread applications and potential benefits that basic research and the promise it holds to address the real problems of today and tomorrow."

In September, Toner will embark on a one-year sabbatical to do additional research on flocking, or collective behavior, at IBM Yorktown Heights and the University of California, Berkeley, under a fellowship from the New York City-based Simons Foundation.

Robot obeys to commands and gestures

ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? At the CeBIT in Hanover, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the FZI Research Center for Information Technology will present innovations for our everyday life in the future. At the joint stand G33 in hall 26, a humanoid kitchen robot will move around. The FZI House of Living Labs will present the interactive HoLLiE service robot and solutions for intelligent energy management.

ARMAR Robot Learns by Watching

A robot helping in the household no longer is a dream of the future. ARMAR, the humanoid robot, can understand commands and execute them independently. For instance, it gets the milk out of the fridge. Thanks to cameras and sensors, it orients itself in the room, recognizes objects, and grasps them with the necessary sensitivity. Additionally, it reacts to gestures and learns by watching a human colleague how to empty a dishwasher or clean the counter.

Thus, it adapts naturally to our environment. At the CeBIT, ARMAR will show how it moves between a refrigerator, counter, and dishwasher.

BluntDinerz Food and Drink Blog. Las Vegas Dining Scene-Cocktail ...

Hey Bluntz-

If you haven't noticed, the blog has had some different content, and stuff you may have not expected. I've been posting irregularly, too. Not how I like it and, now that I have some more time on my hands, I've been able to catch up. I have a couple of projects I've been working on, and I would like to tell you about one of them, just real quick.

As you know, BluntDinerz blogs pretty heavily about food trucks. The food truck community are my street artist heroes of the new millenium and I love how they've changed the playing field and have brick and mortar joints running. It's about time something came along to straighten this out. Restaurants need a reality check. Hey that reminds me, check out this very cool website called restaurant reality check. It's good stuff.? My contribution to the food truck community is my a website called bumpersplash. It's a free classifieds for the food truck community and those providing goods and services to the industry.

Bumpersplash is hooked up real tight with bells and whistles like facebook log in, ability to embed YouTube videos, and social sharing buttons to tweet, share, and +1 your listing. I will also be posting all listings in the food trucks for sale category on the official bumpersplash Facebook fan page. It's totally free to post food truck related classified ads with up to four photos on bumpersplash. I have even added a community discussion board for users to communicate with each other, and a discussion board where you can talk directly with me or one of my administrators. Trucks can post their schedules and upcoming events as well.

Back to business, or whatever you want to call my ramblings.

I'm back in full form, and coming with great posts in all your favorite categories. I've uncovered some tasty gems. You may have noticed that the look of the blog has changed. I'm trying to concentrate on my colors and not look so scattered. The biggest change is the new header. Which will be up by tonight. I do have some prrofs from the artist that should give a good idea what it's gonna look like. He was kind enough to give me a couple different color schemes. I think I know which one I am gonna use, but I thought I would let my readers put in their two cents. I might be wrong.

Which color scheme do you like best?

By the way, this logo was bought on fiverr, from user mattanja. Great kid.
Be talking to you real soon. Thanks for reading.

Saif for more films on hockey

Mumbai, Feb 23

Saif Ali Khan says he plans to promote his home production "Agent Vinod" through the World Series Hockey starting Feb 29.

"Hockey needs to be promoted and even 'Agent Vinod' needs a platform. Like hockey even 'Agent Vinod' has national hero in it. Both need attention and that is how both are connected," Saif told reporters Thursday at a press conference to unveil the trophy of World Series Hockey.

Bridgestone, the world largest tyre and rubber manufacturing company, has partnered with World Series hockey that will continue till April 2 and will involve 200 leading Indian and international players who will showcase their talent in 59 matches.

Saif has a cross-marketing tie-up with the series and his film "Agent Vinod".

Saif is glad to be associated with sporting events and said: ?Since hockey is our national game, more films should be made on this subject. Hockey does deserve much more importance."

So far the only commercially successful film on hockey has been Shah Rukh Khan starrer "Chak De! India".

Banana Wonder: Extreme PDX Urban Food and Drink Hike (10 ...

Last weekend, an urban hike happened. We walked over 10 miles and consumed god knows how many calories. It was supposed to be pouring rain that day, but luckily, Portland weather PMS turned in our favor and stayed dry.?

We started off at my place in the deep Southeast,?otherwise?known as?Outer Space with fresh orange-pear mimosas to, well, gather strength. This got us to His Bakery, a tiny Jesus centered bakery specializing in cinnamon rolls and cakes. They were about to close, but we managed to snag a few wrapped buns. *bonus: the little old lady running the front microwaved our pastries for us.

Jesus loves you, cinnamon roll

The next stop was to Arleta Library Bakery Cafe for the proclaimed "Portland's Best Biscuits-n-Gravy." In this town, those are fighting words, especially with joints like Pine State Biscuits?around. I got a hot tip Arleta was worth its words from my pal H.C. L.A. and O.C. Foodventures, who is coincidentally the inventor of the urban hike, having organized epic urban hikes all over Southern California.

I totally ignored "The Grecian."

My big regret in the photo taking process is that I didn't get a cross section to show the glorious, yellow-gold,?flaky?biscuits. Rich, savory with a hint of piney freshness from the rosemary, the gravy proved to be a cosmic component of the dish. ? Did we love every last drop?

Yes.?The bragging rights are confirmed.

After the biscuits and gravy?comatose, a walk was very much needed.?

We headed out on SE Foster, still in the Lents neighborhood, known for having a strong Russian community.

We continued down Foster for $1 espresso shots at Yo Mama's. The espresso tasted sour. It was bad, might have been the hungover looking barista? I tossed mine.

cheap shot, no back talk

Onward, we popped in to the Artistic Taxidermy, which features Antler Chandeliers permanently on sale. Upon entrance, the strong smell of animal and?formaldehyde slapped us in the face.?

No Portland urban hike is complete without a visit to a strip club. It was around 2pm, so we figured it was late enough for a visit. We stayed for a drink and one of my hikers "put a girl through school."

We walked about two miles to Pub at the End of the Universe to find that it was not open yet, so we went to Ships Ahoy for $2 PBRs and $1 jello shots.?Unfortunately, they only had one jello shot left and I got it because I am a sneaky mofo. ?I didn't want to make this a naughty by nature drinking crawl, but one of my hikers insisted on visiting another strip club where we took fireball shots.?

Portland has its very own cider bar, so a visit to Bushwhacker Cider was necessary. Many of us had their featured dry cider, which looked like sparkling water, but tasted like crisp?refreshment. We also ate a round of pickled hard boiled eggs here (not pictured and not for the faint of heart).

We walked to Hawthorne to one of Portland's most famous food cart conglomerates. You know, the one with Whiffies Pies and Potato Champion.?Our strategy: get as much as possible and everyone take communion.?

This is the closest I got to documenting the $5 BBQ beef and mozzarella whiffie pie. It was a glorious bite of tender beef and mild BBQ sauce.?

Chili cheese fries from Potato Champion. To be perfectly honest, these were not memorable and I have no idea why poutine was not in hand.?

The sleeper of the night was Bubba Bernie's?Oyster Po' Boy. There is nothing better than a freshly fried, perfectly crispy oyster with a touch of horseradish and all the cooling vegetables to balance for perfection.?

So good, another was ordered.?

No urban hike in Portland is complete without crossing a bridge. The Hawthorne got crossed in this case.?
We went straight to Hubers Cafe for Portland's best Spanish Coffee. While it was true that these coffees are delicious, I wasn't in the mood for a coffee this late at night and was unable to finish my drink. I will?definitely?come back for a late morning or early afternoon kick one of these days, sit in one of the dark booths and read something by Henry Miller.?

And now...?drum roll?please... we made it to the Pearl for the grande finale: bone luges at Metrovino. A bone luge is a shot of booze funneled down an emptied shank bone. Thanks?http://boneluge.com/. At Metrovino, you actually have to eat the marrow from the roasted bone first.?

At this point, the crowd has gathered (aka my MBA cohort and fiance) and the luging had commenced.?

I performed my bone luge with a?recommended sweet?Riesling?while others opted for tequila and port. Was it all that? Not to me, but at least one of my friends said it was the highlight and favorite thing consumed of the trip.?

Don't knock it till you try it.

As we left the?restaurant, I looked down at my?iPhone?and realized it had been a complete 12 hours of urban hiking. Extreme, indeed.?
