After crash, Spanish officials defend lucrative train industry

Spain has pinned its hopes on high-speed rail to diversify its struggling economy.

In the aftermath of last week?s deadly train derailment in Spain, as the human tragedy gives way to the security and legal investigations, all sides are working hard at defending their interests?? especially the state rail industry.

Spain has the world?s second biggest high-speed railway system with 3,100 kilometers (1,900 miles), trailing only China. It?s one of the country?s signature success stories that President Barack Obama lauded. It's also a profitable high-tech industry, precisely the kind Spain needs to remodel its construction-dependent economy.

At least 79?people lost their lives, and more than two dozen remain in critical condition, after the train connecting Madrid and the northwestern Galician city of Ferrol on the Atlantic Ocean derailed just minutes from entering the Santiago station with more than 220 on board.

The train was reportedly traveling at more than twice the speed limit and the driver, who is under police custody, is due to testify in court?Sunday. It was Spain?s worst train accident in more than 40 years, although rail travel here, and generally in Europe, is statistically safer than any other mode of transportation.

Behind the scenes though, the rail industry and officials are going out of their way to defend the safety and record of the high-speed system given the economic stakes. Many others, including rail unions and fellow train drivers, are disputing the sole responsibility of the Santiago driver, even if there is little doubt the train was speeding.?

The court will weigh these and other narratives, often conflicting, that have emerged from the tragedy. ?

The investigation into the accident has only begun: The train equivalent to black boxes haven?t been reviewed. But Transport Minister Ana Pastor said drivers are responsible for disregarding safety guidelines, echoing the broader government conclusion that human error caused the tragedy.

The two state railway companies, Renfe in charge of trains and Adif in charge of rail infrastructure, have also publicly ruled out safety issues and suggested the accident was the driver?s fault. The train makers, which include state-owned companies, also suggested speed was the cause.

Protecting a cash cow?

Indeed, some of the preemptive defense of Spain?s railway industry is coming from officials, to the point that some are raising conspiracy theories.

?It?s obvious there are a lot interests involved, including a lot of economic interests from some companies or high-speed [system] suppliers,? Alberto Nu?ez Feij?o, regional leader of Galicia, said candidly on Saturday.?

Mr. Feij?o was referring to several multi-billion euro contracts that Spanish consortia are competing for around the globe, including a 12 billion euro plan to connect Rio de Janerio and Sao Paulo in Brazil ahead of the 2016 Olympics.

Some mega projects that have been awarded include one in Kazakhstan and a 6.8 billion euro line to connect Medina and Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Spanish companies are eyeing a 14 billion euro connection between Moscow and St. Petersburg in Russia and one in California to connect Sacramento and San Diego, along with other proposed projects.

Bigger investment than roads

The Spanish rail industry?s combined revenue in 2012 was 4.8 billion euros, of which it exported 2.8 billion euros, after 21 percent growth. The industry employs 18,000 people. And the government has allocated some 25 billion euros in state investment in its infrastructure plan until 2024, more than in road infrastructure.

The stakes for both private and public interests is best illustrated through the prized Brazil contract. One of the conditions to qualify to tender offers is to have had no fatal accidents in the previous five years.

That explains why Renfe, Adif, and other companies, along with government officials have all insisted that the Santiago derailment is not technically a high-speed one because it happened on conventional tracks that the train switched into a few kilometers back as it entered Santiago.

Indeed, the train and tracks involved don?t travel at the top velocities of other high-speed rails in the country. The locomotives used in this route are specially designed to be able to switch between conventional and high-speed tracks ?which are wider and slower.

Still, the state railway companies include the segment as part of its high-speed rail system, the first leg of work to connect Madrid and Galicia that will end in 2018.

Johnson defends flyweight title beating Moraga

SEATTLE (AP) ? Demetrious Johnson used an armbar on John Moraga late in the fifth round and successfully defended his UFC flyweight championship with a submission victory Saturday night before a partisan hometown crowd.

Johnson, making the second defense of the flyweight crown, controlled most of the fight, then ended it at 3:43 of the fifth round, bending Moraga's right arm to the point referee Herb Dean stopped the fight. Johnson (18-2-1) leaped to his feet with four spinning kicks in the center of the ring to celebrate his title defense.

The co-main event saw young Canadian star Rory MacDonald (15-1) take a unanimous decision over Jake Ellenberger (29-7) in a welterweight fight that left the crowd cascading boos after the much-anticipated matchup failed to live up to its billing. But MacDonald's strategy of avoiding Ellenberger's big punches worked and ran his winning streak to five.

In other fights on the main card, Robbie Lawler used a huge kick to floor Bobby Voelker in a second-round knockout. Liz Carmouche also had a second-round victory, stopping Brazil's Jessica Andrade in her UFC debut.

It was a dominant performance for Johnson, fighting less than an hour from his home in Parkland. From the start, Johnson had the home crowd on his side as the chant of "Mighty Mouse! Mighty Mouse!" ? Johnson's nickname ? started almost immediately.

Johnson controlled the fight with takedowns and retaining top control. He nearly got a choke submission on Moraga at the end of the first round, then pinned Moraga's arms and unloaded punches to his stomach in the second. Johnson regularly took Moraga (13-2) to the mat and nearly ended the fight with an armbar submission late in the third round, only to see Moraga slide free.

Moraga's best chance in the fight came late in the fourth round when he caught Johnson with a right hand that stunned the champion. Johnson stumbled back against cage, but quickly regained control, bouncing off the fencing and taking the charging Moraga to the mat. The punch left Johnson's nose bloodied, but the champion never let Moraga mount any offense in the final round and was finally able to get the armbar on Moraga.

MacDonald entered the No. 3 ranked contender in the 170-pound welterweight division, while Ellenberger was ranked No. 4. It wasn't an elimination bout for a shot at champion Georges St. Pierre, especially because MacDonald has said numerous times he has no interest in fighting his training partner and mentor.

The fight might have been boring, but MacDonald was determined not to get caught by Ellenberger's noted punches.

Ellenberger got a few shots in early as blood started trickling from MacDonald's nose late in the first round, but that was the extent of the excitement for the first 10 minutes. The tactical first two rounds drew loud boos from the unhappy crowd, with MacDonald landing most of the punches that were thrown.

Ellenberger recorded a takedown with 1 minute left in the fight, but MacDonald's ground defense was excellent. MacDonald winning 30-27 on two scorecards and 29-28 on the other.

Lawler was impressive in his victory. Within the first 2 minutes, Voelker's nose was bloodied as Lawler (21-9) landed an array of hooks, high knees and kicks to Voelker's face. Voelker (24-10) made it through the first round barely, but didn't last long in the second. Lawler landed a left-footed kick to the side of Voelker's head that sent him to the canvas and two punches later the fight was over at 24 seconds of the second round.

Andrade (9-3) was making her UFC debut coming up from Brazil, while Carmouche was a headliner just a few months ago when she lost to women's champ Ronda Rousey at UFC 157. Carmouche (8-3) gained control and started landing heavy punches early in the second round. Carmouche spent more than 2 minutes battering Andrade's head before the fight was finally stopped at 3:57 of the second round.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) ? It?s been three months since the Parkland Community Garden opened and Councilwoman Attica Scott invited the community on its progression.

The goal is to encourage healthy living and eating by teaching people in urban neighborhoods how to grown their own fresh food.

?We live on Hazel Street, we?ve grown up in the Parkland community and just to see the revitalization going on and interested neighbors, it?s wonderful,? resident Mary Agnew said.

Now that the community garden has proven its success, volunteers are expanding it to add 6 new raised beds.

There are also talks of doing the same thing in the southwest part of district one.

Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn to be tried for pimping

By Alexandria Sage and Chine Labbe, Reuters

Former International Monetary Fund head Dominique Strauss-Kahn will be tried on charges of pimping, prosecutors said on Friday, capping an inquiry into sex parties attended by a man whose French presidential hopes were dashed by a separate 2011 U.S. sex scandal.

Prosecutors in the northern city of Lille said investigating judges had determined that Strauss-Kahn, 64, who has been under investigation in the case since 2012, should be judged by a criminal court.

The decision came as a surprise after a public prosecutor had recommended in June that the inquiry be dropped without trial.

"We're not in the realm of the law, we're in ideology. We're sending someone to court for nothing," said Henri Leclerc, one of Strauss-Kahn's lawyers.

The so-called Carlton affair, named after a hotel in Lille, involves sex parties that Strauss-Kahn has acknowledged attending.

He says he was unaware that the women who participated were prostitutes.

Strauss-Kahn is charged with "aggravated pimping." Pimping under French law is a broad crime that can encompass aiding or encouraging the act of prostitution. Strauss-Kahn was charged with the more serious form because it allegedly involved more than one prostitute.

The crime carries a maximum term of 10 years in prison and a fine of 1.5 million euros ($2 million).

The former French finance minister quit his post as head of the IMF in 2011 after being accused of raping a maid in New York, a charge that was later dropped.

(AP) ? A system of thunderstorms across western North Carolina stalled on Saturday and dumped about a foot of rain on the area, causing power outages and flash floods that swamped homes and washed out roads and bridges.

There were 18 reports of swift-water rescues, and one minor injury, said Jim Dickerson, spokesman for Catawba County Emergency Services. He did not have details.

Hickory Mayor Rudy Wright urged residents to stay indoors and away from flooded roads, The Charlotte Observer reported (http://bit.ly/1buP7OY).

"This is a time for all of us to be very careful and patient," he said. "The cleanup is going to take a while."

Parts of Catawba and surrounding counties were under water Saturday. Catawba County officials said some of the worst flash flooding in decades followed a nearly stationary weather system that dumped 10 inches of rain in about six hours.

Officials closed 65 roads in Catawba County by Saturday afternoon. At least six will remain closed for up to three months to repair damage, Dickerson said.

A full damage assessment will begin Sunday, he said.

High Shoals Lake in Catawba County rose nearly five feet over a 10-hour span. Officials said high water will move down the Catawba River later Saturday, possibly causing more flooding. The rain had stopped in the area by late afternoon Saturday. The National Weather Service said the heavy rain will move east across the western piedmont of North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina.

Several miles of Interstate 85 in Cabarrus County was closed for a short time due to high water. Traffic moved at a crawl along both I-85 and Interstate 77 north of Charlotte as drivers navigated water several inches deep in spots. In Lincoln County, there were reports of up to three feet of water covering roads.

Duke Energy reported about 5,000 power outages.

It is at least the fourth major flash flooding event in the Charlotte region in the past month. Highway officials already are working to repair more than a dozen Charlotte-area roads damaged by previous flooding.

Democratic Party chair: Mayor Filner should resign

by Catalina Camia on Jul. 26, 2013, under News

Source: USA TODAY

WASHINGTON ? The national chairwoman of the Democratic Party is calling on San Diego Mayor Bob Filner to resign ?for the good of the city.?

Seven women have come forward to accuse Filner, elected in November, of sexual harassment. The former Democratic congressman has apologized for his behavior, but has rejected calls to step aside and insists ?due process? will vindicate him.

?The misconduct Mayor Bob Filner has been accused of is reprehensible and indefensible,? said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, who does double duty as Democratic National Committee chair. ?I am personally offended by his actions and I firmly believe no employee should face a hostile environment or harassment at their place of employment.

?There is no place for this type of conduct in the workplace and certainly not in our city halls and public offices,? she said.

Wasserman Schultz?s comments echo a theme sounded by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who called the conduct exhibited by Filner ? and New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner ? ?reprehensible.? Weiner has rejected calls to quit his campaign, amid revelations that he continued to send salacious messages to women online even after such behavior forced him to quit Congress in 2011.

Municipal offices in California are non-partisan. Filner, a member of Congress from 1993 until his election in San Diego, is the first Democrat to be elected mayor of California?s second-most populous city in 20 years.

Sports Illustrated: Stanford forward Brown suffers fourth ACL tear

Stanford's Andy Brown will miss the 2013-2014 season after yet another ACL injury.

Chris Coduto/Icon SMI

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) Stanford forward Andy Brown's basketball playing career is over after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in his knee for the fourth time since 2009.

Cardinal coach Johnny Dawkins said in a statement Wednesday that Brown tore the ACL in his right knee during a team workout Tuesday morning. Brown's previous ACL tears were in his left knee.

"Everyone associated with our program is saddened by Andy's latest injury," Dawkins said. "Nobody has worked harder to get back into playing shape, having already experienced three tears and waiting two full years before putting on a uniform. What makes this even more disappointing is Andy had already passed the initial test of getting back on the court.

"He was a highly-productive player for our team last year and we were fully counting on him to be a key contributor again this season. More importantly, his presence and leadership will be extremely difficult to replace. Andy is a fighter, he will bounce back and has the full support of the Stanford basketball family."

Brown was coming off the first full season of his career, averaging 6.2 points and 2.8 rebounds. He shot a team-best 48.5 percent from the floor.

Brown sat out his freshman year as a medical redshirt after tearing the ACL in his left knee on the first day of practice. He also tore the same ACL in January of 2009 at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana.

In August 2010, Brown tore his left ACL again during a team workout and missed the entire season. He finally made his Stanford debut during the 2011-12 season, playing limited minutes during the Cardinal's run to the NIT tournament title.

Brown received his undergraduate degree in communication last month. He is now working toward a master's degree in communication and will remain a part of the team next season, which would have been his last.

"I just want to thank all of my teammates and coaches during the past four years who have always been there to support and encourage me," Brown said. "I never would have been able to battle back through these injuries without their help. Even though this is a difficult way to end my career, I feel grateful to have been able to wear a Stanford uniform and contribute to such a great program and university. I will do everything I can to help the team from the sideline this year and am looking forward to all that we will accomplish."

Zotac ZBox Nano XS AD13 Plus

When we reviewed the Zotac ZBox Nano AD12 Plus back in February we were impressed with its diminutive size and assortment of I/O ports but lamented the fact that you had to supply your own OS, keyboard, and mouse. We weren't very impressed with its performance, either. With the ZBox Nano XS AD13 Plus you get the same processor configuration in an even smaller chassis, and slightly better performance thanks to the addition of a solid state drive. You still have to supply your own operating system and peripherals, though.

Design and Features
The AD13 Plus measures 4.1-by-4.1-by-1.5 inches (HWD) and weighs less than a pound (0.74 pounds), making it smaller than the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus by almost an inch and lighter by around 7.9 ounces. The basic design remains the same with a black plastic top and brushed silver sides. One corner of the top sports a small Zotac logo while the adjacent corner is home to an embedded LED power indicator. Once powered up, the lid glows with a bright green circle.

To get inside the Zbox you must loosen the four rubber feet/screws and remove the bottom cover. There isn't much you can do in the way of expansion other than replacing the existing 2GB memory module with a higher capacity module (up to 8GB) and replacing the 64GB mSATA drive with a higher capacity mSATA drive. However, you can install the included VESA mounting plate if you want to mount the box on the back of a VESA-compliant HDTV or monitor.

The front-facing side holds a power switch, a 6-in-1 card reader slot, an eSATA/USB combo port, and two audio ports (headphone/SPDIF, microphone). The rear side panel contains two USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, a gigabit Ethernet port, an HDMI output, and the power jack. Gone is the DisplayPort input from the A12 model. Another HDMI port would be beneficial for connecting to multiple devices though.

In additional to the aforementioned VESA mounting plate the ZBox comes with a remote control for use with Media Center applications. An IR receiver is built in to the front of the ZBox but you also get a USB receiver that you can use if you decide to tuck the box away out of sight or mount it behind an HDTV. Also included are a power adapter, a driver disk, a USB Wi-Fi 802.11n adapter, a quick start guide, and a user guide. You have to supply your own mouse and keyboard, and you'll have to install your own operating system on the solid state drive. Zotac covers the ZBox with a one year warranty.

Performance
Zotac ZBox Nano XS AD13 Plus The AD13 Plus is fueled by a 1.7GHz AMD E2-1800 dual-core CPU with an onboard AMD Radeon HD 7430 graphics controller, and 2GB of DDR3 system memory. Although these are the same exact components found on the A12, the A13 managed slightly better scores on our benchmark tests, with slightly being the operative word.

Its PCMark 7 score of 1,681 was 641 points higher than the A12 but paled in comparison to the Intel Core i3-powered Intel NUC DC3217BY (3,704) and the Core i5-powered Giada i53 Mini PC (4,337).

Zotac ZBox Nano XS AD13 Plus

Not surprisingly, results from the Cinebench R11.5 CPU test were similar. The A13 scored a lowly 0.70 but it did edge out the A12 (0.65). The Giada led the pack with a score of 2.17.

The A13 needed 6 minutes 21 seconds to complete our Handbrake encoding test, while the Intel NUC did it in 2:32. The ZBox A12 took a lengthy 6:41 seconds to complete the test.

The AD13 Plus's poor showing on our productivity and multimedia tests comes as no surprise as this box is meant for HTPC (Home Theater PC) tasks like storing and playing video and music rather than encoding video and rendering 3D images.

The on-chip Radeon HD 7340 renders video just fine but you don't want to press it into duty for 3D gaming. It managed just 7.6 frames per second (fps) on our medium quality Aliens vs. Predators test and 5.8 fps on the high quality test (you'll want at least 30 fps for smooth game play). Results were similar on our Heaven gaming tests with scores of 6.3 fps (medium quality) and 1.9 fps (high quality).

You don't get much in the way of computing power from the Zotac ZBox Nano XS AD13 Plus, but that's not what this little box is about. It has more than enough chops to store and stream media, and it won't take up much room in your entertainment center. Although its $300 price is affordable keep in mind that you'll have to supply your own OS, keyboard, and mouse, which can drive the price up considerably (unless you decide to go the Linux route). If you want a more robust nettop, consider our Editors' Choice, the Acer Revo RL100-UR20P. It's more expensive but it comes with an OS pre-installed and ships with a keyboard and a mouse, and it has a Blu-ray drive.

APNewsBreak: Homeland Security official probed

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama's choice to be the No. 2 official at the Homeland Security Department is under investigation for his role in helping a company run by a brother of former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, The Associated Press has learned.

Alejandro Mayorkas, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, is being investigated for his role in helping the company secure an international investor visa for a Chinese executive, according to congressional officials briefed on the investigation. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release details of the investigation.

Mayorkas was named by Homeland Security's Inspector General's Office as a target in an investigation involving the foreign investor program run by USCIS, according to an email sent to lawmakers late Monday.

In that email, the IG's office said, "At this point in our investigation, we do not have any findings of criminal misconduct." The email did not specify any criminal allegations it might be investigating.

White House press secretary Jay Carney referred questions to the inspector general's office, which said that the probe is in its preliminary stage and that it doesn't comment on the specifics of investigations.

The program, known as EB-5, allows foreigners to get visas if they invest $500,000 to $1 million in projects or businesses that create jobs for U.S. citizens. The amount of the investment required depends on the type of project. Investors who are approved for the program can become legal permanent residents after two years and can later be eligible to become citizens.

If Mayorkas were confirmed as Homeland Security's deputy secretary, he probably would run the department until a permanent replacement was approved to take over for departing Secretary Janet Napolitano.

The email to lawmakers said the primary complaint against Mayorkas was that he helped a financing company run by Anthony Rodham, a brother of Hillary Rodham Clinton, to win approval for an investor visa, even after the application was denied and an appeal was rejected.

Mayorkas, a former U.S. attorney in California, previously came under criticism for his involvement in the commutation by President Bill Clinton of the prison sentence of the son of a Democratic Party donor. Another of Hillary Clinton's brothers, Hugh Rodham, had been hired by the donor to lobby for the commutation. Mayorkas told lawmakers during his 2009 confirmation hearing that "it was a mistake" to talk to the White House about the request.

Hillary Clinton, who stepped down as secretary of state on Feb. 1, is considered a possible contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016.

According to the Inspector General's email, the investigation of the investor visa program also includes allegations that other USCIS Office of General Counsel officials obstructed an audit of the visa program by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The email did not name any specific official from the general counsel's office.

The email says investigators did not know whether Mayorkas was aware of the investigation. The FBI's Washington Field Office was told about the investigation in June after it inquired about Mayorkas as part of the White House background investigation for his nomination as deputy DHS secretary.

The FBI in Washington has been concerned about the investor visa program and the projects funded by foreign sources since at least March, according to emails obtained by The AP.

The bureau wanted details of all of the limited liability companies that had invested in the EB-5 visa program. Of particular concern, the FBI official wrote, was Chinese investment in projects, including the building of an FBI facility.

"Let's just say that we have a significant issue that my higher ups are really concerned about and this may be addressed way above my pay grade," an official wrote in one email. The FBI official's name was redacted in that email.

Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, sent the FBI a lengthy letter Tuesday asking for details of its review of the foreign investor visa program and Chinese investment in U.S. infrastructure projects.

Chinese investment in infrastructure projects has long been a concern of the U.S. government. In September, the Obama administration blocked a Chinese company from owning four wind farm projects in northern Oregon that were near a Navy base used to fly unmanned drones and electronic-warfare planes on training missions. And in October, the House Intelligence Committee warned that two leading Chinese technology firms, Huawei Technologies Ltd. and ZTE Corp., posed a major security threat to the U.S. Both firms have denied being influenced by the Chinese government.

The most routine users of the EB-5 program are Chinese investors. According to an undated, unclassified State Department report about the program obtained by the AP, the U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou, China, processed more investor visas in the 2011 fiscal year than any other consulate or embassy. The document says "applicants are usually coached and prepped for their interviews, making it difficult to take at face value applicants' claims" about where their money comes from and whether they hold membership in the Chinese Communist Party. Party membership would make an applicant ineligible for the investor visa.

Anthony Rodham is president and CEO of Gulf Coast Funds Management LLC in McLean, Va. The firm is one of hundreds of "Regional Centers" that pool investments from foreign nationals looking to invest in U.S. businesses or industries as part of the foreign investor visa program.

There was no immediate response to an email sent to Gulf Coast requesting comment.

It is unclear from the IG's email why the investor visa application was denied. Visa requests can be denied for a number of reasons, including a circumstance where an applicant has a criminal background or is considered a threat to national security or public safety.

Who Speaks for Catholics in the Military on Religious Freedom?

WASHINGTON ? The U.S. bishops have warned that the religious freedom of Catholics and Church institutions is under threat, so recent headlines asserting similar problems in the military are often accepted without question.

But do Catholics in the armed forces actually face challenges to the free exercise of their faith? And if they do, where does the danger come from, and who should provide an authoritative judgment?

The need for clarity on such matters has gained urgency as Louisiana Republican Rep. John Fleming?s ?proposed amendment that would strengthen religious freedom in the military fuels intense controversy on Capitol Hill.

Last month, the House Armed Services Committee approved Fleming?s amendment, which was included in the House-passed National Defense Authorization Act, and the Senate Armed Services Committee passed a similar amendment on a bipartisan vote.

Fleming has stated that Christians in the military face mounting efforts to suppress religious speech, and the Archdiocese for the?Military Services has backed his amendment, reflecting the U.S. bishops' consistent defense of the free exercise of religion as changes in the nation's marriage laws pose challenges to chaplains and service members.

But President Barack Obama has vowed to veto legislation that he said would undermine military order.

And Fleming?s opponents, including Mikey Weinstein of the private Military Religious Freedom Foundation,?argue that the real threat to the free exercise of religion in the military comes from aggressive evangelical groups that have targeted Catholic service members.

Since 2006, Weinstein has fought to bar what he calls ?unconstitutional? proselytizing by evangelical groups on military bases, and he has ?presented himself as the defender of both Catholic and, more recently, openly homosexual soldiers beseiged by "right-wing" Christian fundamentalists.

On July 17, the Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS) stepped into the fray, issuing a?statement?by AMS general counsel John Schlageter that identified the AMS as the "official voice of Catholics in the military."

?The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA is recognized by the federal government as the sole endorser of Catholic military chaplains as well as Catholic chaplains serving in the nation?s Veterans Administration medical centers,? read Schlageter?s statement.

The AMS statement emphasized that the archdiocese was proactive about addressing concerns from Catholics chaplains and service members.?

?Mr. Schlageter?s office serves as the principal recipient of phone calls and letters from Catholic service members who believe their religious freedoms have been violated. The AMS is also the primary advocate for military Catholics on Capitol Hill."

Further, the AMS statement noted that ?Archbishop [Timothy] Broglio himself is on record as a devoted champion of First Amendment rights for Catholic chaplains, as demonstrated in January 2012, among other occasions, when he held firm against efforts by the Army?s Office of the Chief of Chaplains to suppress a pastoral letter in opposition to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) mandate for abortion insurance coverage.?

Archbishop Broglio ? who has endorsed Fleming?s bill, as well as the newly formed Restore Military Religious Freedom coalition,? led by the Family Research Council, ?was traveling and unavailable for further clarification.

But the unusual statement released by the AMS reflected a concerted effort to tamp down public confusion about who speaks for Catholics in uniform.

?Any other individual or group that claims to be charged with protecting the religious-freedom rights of Catholics in the military, no matter how well-intentioned, is acting independently and is not the official voice of Catholics in the military,? the AMS statement concluded.

Still, it won?t be easy for the AMS to get that message across.

Google the?phrase ?religious freedom in the military,? and the first link at the top of the page will take you to a webpage requesting donations.

?Help build the wall. Your donation will allow us to continue our fight in the courts and in the media to protect the constitutionally guaranteed right of religious freedom for our U.S. service members,? states the message on the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.

The donation form follows, and then, at the bottom of the page, the sharp-eyed reader will get a ?Thank you for helping us build the wall separating church and state in the U.S. military.?

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation was established in 2006 by Weinstein, the author of With God on Our Side: One Man?s War Against an Evangelical Coup in America's Military. Weinstein is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and a former legal counsel in the Reagan administration and an aide to Ross Perot.

Weinstein?s mission, states the foundation?s website, is to ?directly battle the far-right militant radical evangelical religious fundamentalists.? Since the foundation was established, Weinstein has battled for the removal of religious symbols on military bases and waged a highly inflammatory campaign against evangelical groups that he says are harassing service members.

This April, Weinstein met with Pentagon officials and several generals to discuss the alleged problem of evangelical proselytizing, and Washington Post columnist Sally Quinn reported on his broader message to the military brass.

?Weinstein told me after the Pentagon meeting that military leaders need to understand that ?there is systematic misogyny, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in the military,?? Quinn wrote. ?He said it is all part of the same culture.

??And what the Pentagon needs to understand is that it is sedition and treason. It should be punished.??

Shortly afterwards, whether as a result of Weinstein's Pentagon meeting or by coincidence, a flurry of statements regarding religious proselytizing in the military were issued by the Department of Defense and the Air Force. Finally, a clarifying May 2 statement from the DOD noted that the "department makes reasonable accommodations for all religions and celbrates the religious diversity of our service members.

"Service members can share their faith (evangelize), but must not force unwanted, intrusive attempts to convert others of any faith or no faith to one's beliefs (proselytization)," read the DOD statement.

"We work to ensure that all service members are free to exercise their constitutional right to practice their religion in a manner that is respectful of other individuals' rights ... in ways that are conducive to good order and discipline."

Still, Weinstein and his staff have pressed their case, prompting Fleming to call on Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel to ignore the foundation's crusade. ?

Fleming has been clear that his amendment did nothing more than bolster existing constitutional protections.

?Even when there is conflict in ideas, more speech is always preferable to limitation of speech,? stated Fleming after the Senate committee passed a similar amendment last month.

Russell Moore, the head of the Southern Baptist Convention?s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, explained the danger for military chaplains during a July 18 interview with The Washington Post.

?It?s easy for [the chaplaincy] to become just a religious extension of the government. If that?s where chaplaincy is headed, you won?t have Catholic and Muslim and Orthodox Jewish chaplains. You?ll just have bland, generic civil American religion,? said Moore.

But Weinstein and his team aren't giving ground, and they now present themselves as the defenders of homosexual as well as Catholic service members.

Chris Rodda, a senior research director at Weinstein?s foundation, posted a recent?column in The Huffington Post that attacked Fleming?s bill as an effort ?to officially grant permission to anti-gay service members to freely discriminate against and harass LGBT service members, despite the fact that DADT [Don?t ask, don?t tell] has been repealed and DOMA [Defense of Marriage Act] has been overturned.?

Responding to Bill Donohue of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, who dismissed the foundation's claims as "bunk," Rodda insisted the foundation had been contacted by?more than?8,000 Catholics, though specifics, such as dates and issues of concern, were not provided.

While the religious-freedom amendment awaits a vote in the Senate, the charges and countercharges will likely continue.

However, the recent efforts to present the foundation as the defender of homosexual service members suggests that the issue of who speaks for Catholics in the military reflects a struggle to define emerging threats to the free exercise of religion during a period of rapid social and political change.

In a parallel First Amendment debate sparked by the U.S. bishops' opposition to the federal contraception mandate, the mandate's supporters have sought to reframe the issue to make Catholic nonprofits the enemy of constitutional civil liberties: Employers who don't provide contraception in their health plans have been accused of violating the religious freedom of individual workers.?

Bored With Your Home? Tips To Improve Your Home! - Contractor ...

You must understand when your projects are out of control, and be willing to hire a professional if needed. The following article can help you decide on which home improvements.

This ensures a surface that is waterproof seal over any cracks.

New floor covering is a great way to update your house.

Texturing walls through the use of drywall mud could cover up many blemishes.

It can cost a lot of money to install a new floor, and you should shop around for the best prices. Discount supply stores and bargain hunting places are very valuable as they can help you save a lot of money.

Try using something different rather than a coffee table in your living room. You may even add a tablecloth couple with teacups for a more country look.

When storing items in containers, use hot glue.It can be difficult to find what you are looking for much easier.Written labels do not provide the contents of a container like the actual hardware itself.

A new garden or outside dining area that goes well with your home?s style will improve the entire look of your property, while clashing styles will look unplanned and even unattractive.

TIP! You can create an appealing and unique bookcase by using wallpaper. Pick a unique and interesting design.

When you consider new cabinets in your house, look to wood cabinets. They are very durable and will last a long time. Some of the more common woods for cabinetry include maple, cherry and oak. They all accept wood stains, you can easily change their color.

Solar lights come in different styles and are inexpensive, but do not give off adequate light.

You can save money if you buy your materials in bulk. A lot of the equipment and the materials used in some projects take a long lead times.

TIP! Downspouts, gutters and chimneys often do not get the attention they deserve in an annual maintenance schedule. The safety of your home depends on the proper cleaning and repair of these essential items.

You will have to pay a premium for speed if you want home improvement done quickly. Most contractors will be pleased to produce swifter work to finish your project more quickly.Just know that they are excited because they will expect more money! You will have to pay a higher price for a job you want rushed.

Small projects that require painting or deal with simple aesthetics can be done gradually after you?ve moved in.

If you are not able to take good care of your yard, think about putting in a yard that is low maintenance. This usually involves rock beds that have hardy plants that don?t need a lot of water. This will eliminate a lot of time and it requires minimal work over time.

TIP! A roof replacement is one of the more expensive home improvement projects. Carefully check the references of your potential roofing company, and always get estimates from three different companies before committing to one.

Windows that have a secondary glazing can be an excellent addition to your home. They cost a bit more, but they will cut down on the cost of energy in your home and reduce exterior noise greatly. Think about making this on your next home improvement project to help save some money in the road.

Some quick and simple home improvement projects can yield big energy savings. Putting in Energy Star compliant light bulbs will help lower carbon output while using 75 percent less energy.

Install a ceiling fans in order to help the air circulation in your home.

TIP! Don?t forget about landscaping when planning your home improvement projects. The front lawn is one of the first things that people see, and you will want this to look exceptional.

One of the most commonly overlooked considerations for home improvement projects is finding an appropriate way to dispose of unwanted debris. At the beginning of any project, you should set aside a space for this to be stored.

Homes that have recently been updated will usually sell quicker and for a higher price than homes that are outdated. It also a good investment.

Investing in some extra insulation will pay off very well over time. Many older homes are often not insulated fully or are inadequately insulated. You can save money for years if you add insulation to a crawl space and attic.

TIP! You may be thinking of installing a conventional fireplace to heat your home; however, this isn?t always the best choice. Apart from aesthetic reasons, this type of system is also quite inefficient because most of the heat ends up going through the chimney.

As you read in the beginning, there are certain home improvement projects that you will not want to do if you have no experience. Use the tips in this article to learn how to identify the projects you and manage on your own and save yourself time and money.

Israel criticized - for allowing Palestinian Arabs to visit during Ramadan

If anyone has any doubt that hating Israel has nothing to do with any objective reality, check out this story from Ma'an:
Israel has granted thousands of Palestinians permits to enter Israel for the holy month of Ramadan, drawing shoppers away from West Bank markets, a Palestinian official said Thursday.

Palestinian youths were granted permits to enter Israel from Sunday to Thursday, but not on Fridays or Saturdays, even though worshipers seek to pray in Jerusalem on Fridays during the holy month.

West Bank markets have suffered as Palestinians head to Israel to go shopping.

Jamal Jawabreh, secretary-general of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry, said the Palestinian economy was already suffering from a lack of liquidity, while salaries have dropped and the cost of living has increased.

Jawabreh said Israel was granting Palestinians access on all days except the days of prayer to encourage them to shop in Israel.

He said Israel was trying to counter its own deficit. The Chambers of Commerce has discussed the issue but is unable to stop Israel granting permits, he added.

Preventing PalArabs from entering Israel is a human rights crime. Allowing them to enter Israel is an economic crime.

The hypocrisy doesn't end there. From JPost:

A group of Palestinians from Ramallah and Jerusalem, along with Arab citizens of Israel from Haifa, Nazareth, Jaffa, and Acre have planned an awareness campaign to encourage Palestinians to buy from only Arab-owned shops. They are compiling a list of shops, restaurants and coffee-shops in Israel owned by Arab citizens of Israel.

A group member told The Media Line that they believe that Israel profits from the permits economically.

?The economy in the West Bank is very restricted and Israel decides what it allows into our markets,? Shoabi said. ?With such a strong Israeli market and economy, it is already hard for our market to compete. So the least we can do is not help Israelis further especially in the holy month of Ramadan?, Shoaibi told The Media Line.

Aren't Arab Israelis - Israeli? Doesn't buying from them still help the Israeli economy?

What Shoabi is really saying is that they want to boycott Jews!

But those evil Jews have their own schemes to hurt the Palestinian Arabs:

?I heard that Israeli shops granted special discounts for West Bankers last year and I want to use them,? [Jamal] Diab said.
They are cunningly putting goods on sale to take advantage of the imprisoned Arabs!

Will the Israeli abuses never stop?

Oh, and how does Ma'an illustrate a story about Palestinian Arabs being allowed to enter Israel? Witha photo of the security barrier!

LA Dodgers defeat Washington Nationals 3-2

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Andre Ethier homered off Rafael Soriano to lead off the ninth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers resumed play after the All-Star break Friday night with a 3-2 win over the Washington Nationals.

Ethier pulled a 1-2 slider just over the wall in right-center, his sixth homer of the year and the second ninth-inning homer allowed by Soriano (1-2) in three appearances.

Hanley Ramirez also homered for the Dodgers, who picked up where they left off before the break, winning for the seventh time in nine games and moving back above .500. They were 12 games below the break-even mark on June 21.

Ronald Belisario (4-5) faced only one batter to get the win, his 14th consecutive appearance without a run allowed. Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 10th save.

The Nationals, hoping to make up ground in the NL East as they began a season-long, 11-game homestand, instead lost for the sixth time in eight games to fall back to .500.

The Nationals also resumed their habit of failing to support Stephen Strasburg, whose ERA dropped to 2.97 to go with his 5-7 record. He allowed two runs over seven innings in near-oppressive humidity, retiring the last 11 batters he faced.

The two-run shot Strasburg gave up to Ramirez in the third inning was a nice piece of hitting, with the Dodgers shortstop going the opposite way with a 95 mph fastball over the outside edge of the plate.

Ricky Nolasco, in his third start with the Dodgers, gave up two runs over 5 1-3 innings ? escaping a bases-loaded, no-out jam along the way ? against the same club that beat him 2-0 on opening day when he was with the Miami Marlins.

The Nationals scored in the second inning when Bryce Harper got a favorable call after he tagged up from second base on a fly ball to right. Yasiel Puig made a stunning on-the-fly throw, and third baseman Juan Uribe tagged the diving Harper on the left leg, but umpire Eric Cooper signaled safe. Harper then scored on a wild pitch.

The Nationals loaded the bases with two hits and a walk in the fourth, but Ian Desmond hit a soft grounder for a forceout at home, Chad Tracy flied out to shallow left, Wilson Ramos hit a comebacker to end the inning, and the crowd booed yet another bout of poor situational hitting by the home team.

Washington tied the game on Demond's RBI single in the sixth, chasing Nolasco.

Good Shepherd Church in Hilltown celebrates 60 years

The shining little church on the hill celebrates its 60th birthday this year.

Good Shepherd Episcopal Church has been in Hilltown since 1953, beginning as a gathering of 22 people in a living room. The congregation moved to hosting services in the one-room Leidytown Schoolhouse on Sundays. The first service in the schoolhouse was on Good Shepherd Sunday, giving the parish its name.

Betsy Uhl, one of the original parishioners, has been attending Good Shepherd services in the schoolhouse since she was 11.

In 1956, the schoolhouse was put up for auction. The parishioners together raised enough funds to purchase the school, and it has been the home of the church since then.

?We?ve always been a can-do congregation,? Uhl said. ?We might be small, but we?ve had some remarkable members and we get things done. Whenever there?s been a need or emergency, we?ve rallied together to face it. Coming up with the money to buy the church is just one example.?

A few years ago, there was a leak in the church?s flat roof, causing rotting and severe damage, Uhl said. A section of the parish house wall was on the verge of collapse.

?We had an emergency situation where we needed to come up with the money and repair the roof,? she said. ?The vestry and congregation came together, and we got the money in time. Whenever we have had a need, we?ve found a way to solve the problem.?

In its 60 years in Hilltown, Good Shepherd has been a leader in women?s involvement in church.

?We were the first church to have women in the vestry in the Episcopal church,? said Uhl. ?And we were the first to have a female senior warden.?

Hilltown?s current pastor is a woman named Harper Turney, who leads the congregation with her husband, Wayne Turney.

?Rev. Turney and her husband have enlightened our services at Good Shepherd,? Uhl said.

Back in February, on the actual day of the 60th anniversary, Turney and the parish hosted a small luncheon for members of the church.

?We had a birthday cake,? Barbara Cassel, the 60th anniversary event chairwoman, said. ?It was a small celebration, just for current parishioners. In October, we?ll be holding our big event.?

To celebrate its 60th anniversary, Good Shepherd is planning to host an open house Oct. 20.

?We?re going have a sort of homecoming party,? Cassel said. ?We?re inviting all current and past members, family and friends for a luncheon in October, after the regularly scheduled 10 a.m. church service.?

After the private luncheon, Good Shepherd will host an open house for parishioners and members of the community.

?The church will be open, and there will be committees stationed throughout the church,? Uhl said. ?They?ll have presentations about what?s been going on in the church. We will have a history presentation and displays for all of the committees.?

Uhl said she is looking forward to gathering with past and present church members.

?Our church is a very welcoming place,? she said. ?People always say that they feel something here that they haven?t felt at other churches.?

Three weeks after SCOTUS decision, GOP throws in the towel on marriage fight

Buzzfeed: House Republican leaders announced in a court filing Thursday that they will not defend remaining statutes similar to the Defense of Marriage Act that ban recognition of same-sex couples? marriages.

The move comes three weeks and one day after the Supreme Court ruled in Edith Windsor?s case that the federal definition of marriage in DOMA was unconstitutional because it banned the federal government from recognizing same-sex couples? marriages.

?[T]he House has determined, in light of the Supreme Court?s opinion in Windsor, that it no longer will defend that statute,? lawyers for the House Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (BLAG), controlled by House Republicans, wrote about veterans? benefits statutes that similarly ban recognition of same-sex couples? marriages.

"After millions of taxpayer dollars wasted defending discrimination, it?s a historic sign of the times that the House leadership is dropping its pointless quest to maintain second-class status for lesbian and gay couples," said Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin. I wish I could agree. It?s not a ?sign of the times" that Boehner?s caucus dropped the suit, it?s that it had finally become hopeless. Republicans have not accepted equality. If there was any hope at all of forcing the VA to discriminate against same-sex spouses, you know that the House GOP would still be in that courtroom, plugging away.

Senators ready to restore lower college loan rates

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A bipartisan compromise on student loans promises better deals for students and parents over the next few years but could spell higher rates as the economy improves.

The Senate deal pegs the interest rates on new loans to the financial markets and was expected to come to a vote next week, well before students returning to campus this fall had to sign their loan agreements.

Under the deal, undergraduates this fall could borrow at a 3.9 percent interest rate. Graduate students would have access to loans at 5.4 percent, and parents would be able to borrow at 6.4 percent. Those rates would climb as the economy improves and it becomes more expensive for the government to borrow money.

The compromise heads off the doubling of rates on some students loans, which would cost students an extra $2,600.

"We have gone through weeks of negotiations and we have an agreement," said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.

At the White House, spokesman Jay Carney said President Barack Obama was "glad to see that a compromise seems to be coming together."

And Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said students benefited: "For every one of them, the interest rates on their loans will be lower."

At least for now. The compromise could be a good deal for students through the 2015 academic year, but then interest rates are expected to climb above where they were when students left campus in the spring.

Even in announcing the compromise, it was clear the negotiations were dicey.

"While this is not the agreement any of us would have written, and many of us would like to have seen something quite different, I believe that we have come a very long way on reaching common ground," Durbin told reporters.

Moments later, Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee, said he would revisit the whole agreement this fall, when his panel takes up a rewrite of the Higher Education Act.

"Can we change it? Sure, we can change it," Harkin said. "It's not the Ten Commandments, for God's sake."

Harkin did little to hide his unhappiness with the compromise but said there were few options to avoid a costly hike on students returning to campus this fall.

As part of the compromise, Democrats won a protection for students that capped rates at a maximum 8.25 percent for undergraduates. Graduate students would not pay rates higher than 9.5 percent, and parents' rates would top out at 10.5 percent.

Using Congressional Budget Office estimates, rates would not reach those limits in the next 10 years.

Lawmakers engaged in near-constant work to undo a rate hike that took hold for subsidized Stafford loans on July 1. Rates for new subsidized Stafford loans doubled from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent.

On Wednesday, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau estimated outstanding student debt at $1.2 trillion ? up 20 percent in just two years. Student loans are now the largest form of consumer debt behind mortgages.

The rapid growth in debt is raising alarm among experts, and there is growing evidence student debt is weighing down the economy ? for instance, by delaying the ability of young graduates to buy homes.

The increase follows the jump in the cost of higher education.

The tuition sticker price at public four-year colleges is up 27 percent beyond overall inflation over the last five years, according to the latest figures from the College Board. This past year it rose nearly 5 percent to an average of $8,655 nationwide.

Only about one-third of full-time students pay that published price, and the average net price ? what the average student does pay after financial aid ? is just $2,910. But net prices have been rising, too, and tuition is just part of the cost of college. Including room and board, the average sticker price at public colleges is now $17,860, and students pay on average $12,110.

At private four-year colleges, the average full tuition price is now just under $40,000, with the average student paying $23,840.

The bipartisan student loan compromise closely hews to what House Republicans passed earlier this year. House and Senate aides alike predicted the differences could be settled quickly.

"When we see the details, I'm hopeful we will be able to put this issue behind us," Republican House Speaker John Boehner told reporters Thursday.

Republicans in both chambers have pushed for a link between interest rates and the financial markets. Obama included that link in his budget proposal, but Democrats balked, saying it could produce government profits on the backs of borrowers if rates continued to climb.

Leaders from both parties, however, recognized the potential to be blamed for the added costs in the 2014 elections if nothing were done.

Even House Democrats who opposed the GOP-led deal there appeared ready to go along.

"While I continue to review the details of the proposal, I'm encouraged that bipartisan efforts continue in the Senate to reverse the student loan interest rate hike. Republicans' agreement to put a cap on student loan interest rates is a positive development," said Rep. George Miller, the top Democrat on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Few students had borrowed for fall classes. Students typically do not take out loans until just before they return to campus, and lawmakers have until the August recess to restore the lower rates. The students who had borrowed for summer programs since July 1 would have their rates retroactively reduced.

The deal was estimated to reduce the deficit by $715 million over the next decade.
