Mitt Romney, Friend Of Small Business? Oh Please? | The ...

Oct 18, 2012 by MICHAEL SILVERSTEIN, Wall Street Columnist

There are so many deceptions flooding out of the Romney campaign these days it?s hard to keep track. But personally, the one he?s getting away with that surprises me the most, is that he?s a guy who understands small business and would thus be better suited than Obama to advance the interests of this vital element of the economy.

Spare me!

In recent years I?ve been one kind of small businessman, a sole proprietor of a writing business. In years past I?ve had experience with other types of small businesses, however, having run both a small job printing shop and a small publishing venture. And let me tell you, for me and for businesspeople in almost all other small enterprises, our experiences are totally and completely different than Romney?s own Bain experiences.

What does this guy really know about real world small business? Has he ever been in the middle of a week not knowing where he?s going to get the money to meet payroll on Friday? Has he had to decide whether to hassle an important account behind in its bills when doing so might get this customer angry and the account lost? Has he ever given up a vacation or purchase of a gift for a loved one because every nickel, every penny, has to be sunk back into the business. Has he ever sat across the desk from a smirking banker who says you can?t get a desperately needed loan, even though you?ve been current in all past loans, because of a change in the bank?s lending rules?

Romney was never the small business guy on one side of that desk. He was the banker on the other side. Smirking, because he?s the guy with all the money.

Romney wants to keep top income tax rates at their present Bush-generated levels for ?small businesspeople? who earn more than $250,000 a year. Right. The guy who runs the local pizzeria or auto repair shop, the woman who runs the local florist or financial services firm in a local mall. They?re all making more than $250,000 a year. Right? Yeah, sure they are. On Planet Vorcon maybe. Not on this planet.

Romney is a Wall Street guy. His business is a Wall Street business. He knows how to run a Wall Street business ? and nothing personally about running a small business.

Oh what the heck. If you buy into his rap on this one, you?ll buy into anything he says. So vote ? and take the consequences.
