NFL Rumors: A Denver Bronco Upset Over Lack of Playing Time

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

Denver Broncos cornerback Tracy Porter has not played since a week five loss to the New England Patriots. Ironically, the Broncos have not lost since. Over the weekend, Porter expressed frustration with not playing on his Twitter account. One of those Tweets read: ?Another healthy day, another healthy wake up. I just smile and keep kicking.? Another Tweet said, ?Life has its ups, life has its downs, always have to stay positive.?

Those Tweets are not outrageous and most people can understand Porter?s frustration; he was signed by the Broncos to be a starter and a major contributor but it hasn?t worked out that way. Porter suffered a seizure in training camp and then suffered some of the same symptoms before the October games versus the San Diego Chargers. He spent the next several weeks getting healthy and during that time; the Broncos took off. They?ve won nine straight and the play of the secondary has been a major reason why. Chris Harris and Tony Carter have played outstanding and frankly they have been better than Porter was in the first five games.

It?s understandable that Porter wants to play but who is going to sit if he does play? Carter, Harris and Champ Bailey are not coming off of the field and Omar Bolden plays special teams; Porter does not. It?s possible that the Broncos could go with an extra defensive back and go with one less player at another position, but then you run the risk of messing with a chemistry that is obviously working.

There are reports that Porter may be activated for Sunday?s game versus the Cleveland Browns and there is one obvious reason to make that move. It is likely that the Broncos will matchup with the Patriots at some point during the playoffs and a healthy Porter could help in that spot. Having four cornerbacks who can all cover one on one would allow defensive coordinator, Jack Del Rio to do a lot of things in order to try and slow down that attack.

It remains to be seen if Porter will play on Sunday or ever again for the Broncos, but this much it true. Even if Porter is activated and plays, he will never return to his starting position. The hard truth that Porter may not want to admit is that he is the fourth, maybe fifth best cornerback on the team.
