Frugal Grandparenting | Frugal Hacks

Glancing at the yard of my nice neighbors, I couldn't help but think it could be considered a child's paradise.? A lovely wooden swing set with additional play equipment close by and an Indian teepee meet my gaze.? A slight turn of the head brings the above ground pool into view.? Further back?is a blow-up water slide.? Motorized cars?are often filled with smiling grandchildren.? Husband and I enjoy the delight this couple have as they entertain and play with their grandchildren.?

As I turn to walk back into my house realizing my grandparenting yard could never be filled with such treasures,?my thoughts return to a conversation Husband and I had last night.? We are temporary empty nesters as our remaining child left at home, Youngest Son, is on the trip of a lifetime.? We miss him and our new little family of three.? Wanting to use this time of togetherness to our advantage, Husband suggested a topic of conversation.? "Why don't we discuss our goals for grandparenting tonight over dinner," he asked by phone call.

Husband and I are?Christians, saved by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.? All our goals and life choices are focused on the Bible.? Deuteronomy 6 is our life passion.?So as we eat our dinner, I begin to share my goals for this new season of life,? including? my desire to read the Bible with?our grandchildren and share all the Lord has done in His Word and in our lives.??

Husband too shares his heart desire of what life will be for our grandchildren when they visit." Grandpa and Nonna's house?will not be known as a place to just come and watch DVD's'" he says.?" Our grandparent home will be one where we stress interaction.? I want us to play games, memorize scripture together and listen to beautiful music.? We?will take walks and share the joys of God's creation."?

I get excited as our conversation continues and we again marval at our three week old first grandbaby.? This new grandson has ushered in a new season of life for us and as I reflect on all that this means I am reminded of what is most important.? Why does it seem that our culture seems to see each new stage of life as one to encourage more materialism?? Not that I am not opposed to celebration, just to the expectations that attend most every event.? Have you checked out what many people think is necessary when a new baby is born??

Looking out the window as my thoughts continue, I will confess I am checking out my trees to find a strong branch for a baby swing.? A kidde pool may someday nestle in our sunny yard.? But even though our yard will never look like the one next door, Husband and I hope our home will be a most delightful place to visit as we give our hearts, time and energy, and yes, sometimes our pocketbooks!? Frugal grandparenting is great!
